And finally we end our program today with a new essay from the NPR series this "I believe ."  [news:/s/00:11.1-00:14.2]
Today we hear from the Howard White of Portland  Oregon [news:/s/00:14.2-00:17.3] .
As a young man ,he play the basketball for the University of Maryland .
He was drafted by the NBA ,but injuries interrupted his career . [news:/s/00:21.9-00:23.8]
while he is now a vice president for Nike . [news:/s/00:23.8-00:25.8]
And he considers himself of a fortunate  man and he feels his belief has  a big  part of that good fortune .
Here's the series   curator    independent  producer   Jay  Allision with more ,hi ,Jay . [news:/s/00:31.0-00:35.0]

Hi ,M.
You know when people write for our series ,they  often look to larger issues in life  to defend their beliefs . [news:/s/00:39.4-00:43.5]
But not  Howard White ,he looked at the smaller  things .
And that's maybe because he began life small himself as a premature baby ,and then end up a  basketball star .
So he notes that  "small beginnings can lead to  the large outcomes "
And that's certainly  a hallmark of this belief .[news:/s/00:57.8-01:00.4]
Here's Howard   White    with his essay ,for this "I believe"  [news:/s/01:00.4-01:04.6]

I worked at a company where there are  about a zillion  employees . [news:/s/01:05.6-01:07.8]
I can say  that i know them all by  name . [news:/s/01:07.8-01:10.4]
But i know my  fair share  of them .  [news:/s/01:10.4-01:12.4]

I think that almost all of them know me .
I say that's the reason  i've been able to go wherever it is   i've made to   in this world .  [news:/s/01:18.3-01:22.1]
It's all based on one simple principle , i believe every sigle person deserves to be acknowledged  .
However  small or simple .the greeting .

When i was about 10 years old ,i was walking down the street with my mother  .
She stopped to speak to Mr.Lee .
I was busy trendy booms at the  zero in this stop sign  with the rock  [news:/s/01:40.4-01:44.9]
I knew i can see Mr. Lee in the  old town   around the neighborhood .
So i did't pay any attention to him .
After we passed Mr. Lee ,my mother stopped  me and said  something .
that  had stuck with  me from that day until now .

She said "you let that  be the last time , you ever  walk by somebody  not  open up  you month to speak .Because even a dog can wag his tail  when it passes you on this  street " [news:/s/02:03.0-02:06.9]
That phrase sounds simple, but it had been a gap pose for  me in the foundation of who i am  . [news:/s/02:15.3-02:19.4]

When you write an essay  like this , you look in the  mirror and see who you are and what makes up you character .
I realize  my aim  will see me in   that day  [news:/s/02:27.2-02:30.9] when i was ten years old .
Even then , i started  to see that when i spoke to someone , they spoke back .And that go good  [news:/s/02:39.4-02:41.5]

It's not just somthing i believe in  ,it's become  a way of life .
I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledges their presence ,no matter how humble they maybe or even how important .

At work , i always ued to say hello to the founder of the company   and ask him how our business was  doing .
But i was  also speaking to the people in the cafe  and the people that clean the buildings and ask how their children were doing .

I remembered that  after a few years of  passing by  the founder .
I had the courage to ask him for a meeting .
we had a great talk .
At a certain poin ,I  asked him  [news:/s/03:20.3-03:22.7]   how far he thought i could go in his company .
He said "if you want to , he can get all the way to this  seat ."

I've become  vice president ,but that hasn't changed the way i approach people .
I still followed my mother's advice .
I speak to everyone  i see ,no matter where i am , i've learned that speaking to people creates  a pathway  until  their world .
And that lets them come into mine ,too .

The day you speak to someone that has their hat hailed down .
And when they lifted up and smiled , you realize how powerful it is just open your mouth and say hello .

That was Howard  White with his essay    for this i believe .
Before his mother passed away , he told Howard  that what she wanted  her great grandchildren to know about  her  was that she knew  how to talk to people .

Michelle , we're hoping to tell me more listeners will talk to us about their beliefs ,big or small ,all the information and all the essays from NPR .ORG .
For this i believe ,I am Jay Allison . back to you ,Michelle .

Thank you ,Jay .
Jay Allison  is  a co-editor with  Den  Gadman ,John  Gragrey and Viky Merry  of the book  [news:/s/04:34.3-04:37.1] this i believe  ,the personal philosophies  of remarkable  men and women .
And that's our program for today .
I am Michelle   and  this is tell me more from   NPR  news .
