I'm Neda Ulaby, each week we listen in as leading authors of fiction and nonfiction read from their most recent works and take questions at independent bookstores. Join us at npr.org/booktour.

StoryCorps is made possible through funding from State Farm, the Atlantic philanthropies, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. And most importantly, through the support of participants and listeners like you nationwide.

Welcome to the StoryCorps podcast, in this episode we'll hear memories from September 11th, 2001. StoryCorps in the National September 11th from Memorial Museum at the World Trade Center are working together to collect an oral history of that day. We hope to record interviews for each of the lives lost in the attacks. That's how Diana DeVito and her 10-year-old son Frankie came to the Storycorps. Diana interviewed Frankie about losing his grandfather, Diana's dad, Bill Steckman. Steckman worked at nightshift atop one World Trade Center as an engineer for NBC's transmitter there.

"We used to play Peter Pan, we used to use the screwdriver as swords, and pretended I was like Peter Pan and he was Captain Hook. He always used to be in the garage, fixing up things with cousin Mikey and he also promised me take me to his work once, but that's not gonna happen."

"I know you were young when it happened, you were only in kindergarten,But is there a time that you were the most scared when all that was going on?"

"I didn't know that something happened until I came to the living room, I knew you were upset, you said there was something wrong with Papa, that made me sacred. And I remember that Mikey told me that planes crashed and he wasn't coming back. "

"So I think you did it to  make you feel better to go to sleep at night?"

"Going up to grandma or my parents, giving them a hug, resting on their shoulder. And sometimes when I am in my room, I pretended that grandpa was right there and nothing was wrong. And my Teddy was right there. So that helps me. "

"Do you think you are different, now than you were before, we lost papa? "

"Yeah, I think I'm different because being in certain places, when I'm at a happy time, just somewhere in my mind, he just won't get out of there, he just stuck in my mind and that makes me a little sadder, where I am. And I have dreams with him. I was imagining looks like seeing each other again. And being really happy as a family, without being sad or anything on September 11th. "

"If you could talk to him right now, what would you wanna say?"

"I love you and there is no other grandfather that I'd rather see than you. "
