StoryCorps is made possible through funding from State Farm, the Atlantic philanthropies, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. And most importantly, through the support of participants and listeners like you nationwide.

Welcome to the StoryCorps Broadcast, in this episode we’ll here memories from September 11th, 2001. StoryCorps in the national September 11th memorial museum at the World Trade Center are working togehter to collect an /oil/ history of that day. We hope to record interviews for each of the lives lost in the attacks. That’s how Diana DeVito and her 10-year-old son Frankie came to the storycorps. Diana interviewed Frankie about losing his grandfather, Diana’s dad Bill Steckman.

Steckman worked at a nightshift at top of World Trade Center. As an engineer for NBC’s transmitter there. “We still play Peter Pan, we used to use this scrooge I was the s//, and pretend I was like Peter Pan that used captained hook, he then // shows to be on the grudge, fixing up things with cousin Mikey and he also praised me take me to his work //, that’s how could happen ”

I know you are young when it happened, you are only in kindergarten, is there time that you were the most scared when what has gone.

I didn’t know that something happened, in //’s living room, and you were upset, you’ve said there was something wrong with Papa, and maybe sacred. And// that Mikey told me that please //, and he was never coming back..

So I think you did make you feel butter to go to sleep at night.

Going up to grandma, up to parents, give them a hug, rest on their shoulder, and so it’s time to run into my room, I pretend that grandpa was right there, there nothing was wrong. And my teddy was right there,/ slow/, that helps me.

Do you think you are different, now than you were before, we lost papa?

Yeah, I think I am different, because being inserting places, where I might have happy time, to somewhere my mind // he just stocked my mind and that makes me a litter sad where I am. And I have a dream with him, I was imagining it seemed like seeing each other again. And meanwhile, we // a family, it was a bit sad on September 11th.

If you could talk to him right now, what would you want to say?

I love you and there is no other grandfather, I am glad to see you.

Thank you DeVito remembering his grandfather, Bill Steckman, Frankie as interviewed by his mum, Diana DeVito in New York city, to see photos of the participants, and to hear more stories, visit storycorps.net, while you are there, you can make a reservation for your own interview, and learn more about the project.
