My Winnipeg is the latest film from the Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin who has lived all of his half century of life in the city of Winnipeg. This is a kind of a love song to that city, it's also a hallucinatory autobiography that incorporates a lot of strange and possibly mythical episode in Canadian history with a lot of strange and possibly mythical episode from Maddin's own life.
"Mother,I have an accident, I ran into a deer"
"What were you doing out there?"
"Attracting party."
"Where did in happen? in a backseat?"
"But what happened?"
"The breal party"
There's a lot of old footage in My Winnipeg that comes from the archaism and then there are a lot of new footage that is often hard to tell the difference, because Maddin is very good at making new movies that look uncannily but also not quite like old movies. So there is a bit of a trump loyal affecting here, where you don't know quite if what you are watching is literally real or some kind of dreamlike hallucinated reenactment.
The movie is wonderful even if you don't know that much about Winnipeg, or frequently don't care that much about the capital of the province of Manitoba, because this is really about Maddin's own personality, his own artistic temperament, his family life, his musings on this city that made him who he is. And Maddin is a very mysterious and enigmatic personality to begin with, so, the, the fusion of his sensibility in the subject matters really, is really something to behold.
