homework

The word of the day is feckless, spelled f-e-c-k-l-e-s-s. Feckless is an adjective that means weak or ineffective, it can also mean worthless and irresponsible.

Here is the word used in a sentence: Although Traver was admired by his colleagues in that newspaper, he turned out to be a feckless reporter and so he was resigned to the copydesk.

Someone feckless is lack in feck, you might very well ask what is feck. Feck is a Scot’s term that means effect or majority, and comes from an alteration of the middle English word effect. So something without feck is without effect, or ineffective.

In the past, feckful meaning efficient sturdy or powerful made an occasional appearance but in this case the weak is outlived strong. Feckless is an commonly used English word today, but feckful has fallen out of use.
