every four years, american who are 18 or older have a big responsibity.our votes decide who become the prisident of unite states.unfortunately the us election system is not that simple.this is the electing us president in plain english .it is easy to imagine every us s vote be counter together on election day.but this is not the case.us elections are not decided by the total a popular vote, but individual states. let me explain,it start with your vote,on the election day, your vote for president and the vice president, you get one choice.then all of the votes in your state acount it,the candidate with the most state wide votes become the candidate your state sppuort for president. this happens across the country untill each state has selected their candidate,we end up with most of the voting to support one candidate each. but this is the problem,we can elect president by just counting out the choice of this state,us states are different.consider this, california has about 36milion pople, cansas has less than 3m,we need a way for californias choice to have more influence on election because the state has more pople.the question becomes how do you make sure each state has the right amount of influence on the election.well,we need a way to acount for the population of eath state.as a example, let us consider my home state of north carlolana.like every state,it is devided up in the congrational districs that base on population.north calolana has 13 districs, calafornia has 53 and cansans has 4,when it is come to the state influence on the election, the number of districs matters most.more population equals more districs equals more influence.the influence a state has an election is mesured by the number of electors, this number come to the number of districs on the state, post number of us senators wich is always two.north calolana has 15 electors, while calafornia has 55,when a canadate wins the voting in the states they win that states number of electors. that is my big popular state can be so important to candidates, their electors add up quickly and the number of electors is what really matters.here is why if you add up the electors of all 50 states in the districs of , there are 538 in total.the candidates go on the election day ,it is went to the majority of 538 or 270 electors. once the candidate wins another states to reach to 270 majority, they have won the election and become the president elect.so lets recap, your vote helps your state choose the single candidate, that candidate receives all the electors from your state.the candidate who can win another state to reach 270 totall electors wins the national election and become the presidet elect.then on the following january 20th,the president elect is sworn in as the next president of unite states. all start with your vote make it count. |
