Transcript:

Attacked by critics for words they called timid in the face of scenes like these. President Barack Obama is using new ones, “appalled” and “outraged”.

“I strongly condemn these unjust actions, and I join with American people in mourning each and every innocent life that is lost.”

At a White House news conference he told reporters he found this scene especially troubling: a young woman said to be bleeding to death from a gunshot.

“It’s heartbreaking. And I think that anybody who sees it knows that there’s something fundamentally unjust about that. ”

But the president said he still won’t interfere in Iran, lest he give its hardline regime ammunition.

“This is the president’s first solo news conference in the briefing room here, and another big reason to call it was to urge Congress to press on with health care reform. But on domestic matters, Obama ended up making a series of painful admissions.”

On the economy, he acknowledged his poll numbers have slipped as the number of Americans out of work has climbed.
