I was looking at your itinerary for the day, and the activities, the stops and the visits, and considering your day yesterday, it just makes me dizzy. When you wake up on a day like this,is this something you relish or is it something you say, "oh, for heaven's sake, I gotta to see Letterman."?

That was unexpected, seeing that appear on the schedule. I was, um, that was one of those where you ask your advisors, " who's responsible for this?"

Yes, exactly right.

And everybody kind of looks down and put out their blueberries.

But I will say...

Nobody is accountable.

So we decided there wasn't gonna be fancy camps during the summer or anything. Basically just goofed off all summer, which I couldn't do.

I started noticing when they would have these townhall meetings and there was vitriol, and general animosity, and anger, and shouting and pushing, and just unsavory behaviour reported. I don't know if it was generally speaking, but it would be reported here and there. And then within the last week, a couple of days ago, Jimmy Carter started talking about this behaviour and was speculating that perhaps this unease or poor decorum was because people was rooted in racism. Is he onto something there or is that something to talk about?

Personally I think it is important to realize that i was actually black before the election. It's true. This is true.

So the American people, I think, gave me the extraordinary honor, and that tells you, I think, a lot about where the country is at. I actually think that what's happened is whenever a president tries to bring about significant changes, particularly during times of economic unease, then there is a certain segment of the population gets very riot up. It happened  FDR was called a socialist and a communist, JFK, there were all kinds of names hurled at him.Ronald Reagan, when he came in office, he was moving in a different direction and people were sure that he was bringing the country down. So  this is not untypical.One of the things you sign up for in politics is  folks yell at you. But i  think what is been missing from the conversation is that the overwhelming majority of people, Republican or Democrate, they just want to see some common sense, they want to see some honesty and integrity in Washington. I think they've been turned off by the shouting and the yelling. And they expect more from the public elected officials. So, that something i want to...
