It is moving. It is sombering. It is a reach back into the history.
The tale is about the family tree of First Lady Obama.
An America map traces her back to slaves and slave owners that were in her past, this woman who has made all her way to the White House. ABC Joungy Dinnies has more on the First of this journey
THe rock of my family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady--Michelle Obama.
This journey began more than a century ago with the death of a slave holders who put all his properties to relatives including a six year old girl named Mavillie valued at 475 dollars. She worked on a farm that grew wheat, corn and cotton, living an unimaginable life of labor. She was one of the three slaves there, a very small farm that wasn’t the kind of notion and plantation we have. With so few slaves, Mivillia was likely to work in the house and labor in the field. As a teenager, she gave birth to a son with a white man.The child is listed in this 1870 census as a mulatto, a term used to describe a person of mixed race. His name was Dolphus Shields, Michalle Obama’s great great grand father. Many families have stories like Mrs Obama did about white ancestors. This is a good memory of him. Shields grew up a free man and became a carpenter. Barbie Helld was his informally adopted daughter. These were just the beautiful parts, full of love.
Three generations later, Maria Shields Roberson would give birth to little Michelle,in Mrs Obama hold sheer Shields. Mrs Shields was a very loving person, so was he. They were just a good match.
A family went from slavery in the south to the house of the White House. It is just an amazing journey, an amazing uniquely American journey. For good morning America Joungy Dinnies ABC news Washington.
