It is moving. It is soul-bring. It is rich back in the history. The tale is about the family tree of the first lady Michelle Obama. And American map traces her back to the slaves and the slave owners that were in her past. This woman who made her all the way to the white house. See ABC * has more on the first of this journey.
The rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation’s next first lady- Michelle Obama.
Hers journey bagan more than a century ago with the death of a slave holder who left all his property to relatives including a 6-year-old girl named * valued at 475 dollars. She worked on the farm and grew weight corn and cotton, living in unimaginable life of neighbor.
She is one of the three slaves. There is a very small farm. It wasn’t a kind of * plantation that we have.
With so few slaves, * likely worked in the house and labored in the fields. As a teenager, she gave birth to a son with a white man. The childlist listed in the 1870 census as *, a term used to describe a person of mix-race. His name was Dolphus Shields, Michelle Obama’s great, great, grandfather.
Many families have stories like Mrs. Obama did about white ancestors.
This is a good memory of him.
She grew up with a free man and became a carpenter. Bobby Hord was his informally adopted daughter.
He was just a beautiful person, full of love.
Three generations later Marian Shields with Robinson gave little Michelle in Mrs. Obama, Hord * Shields.
It seems to be they will be loving persons, so was he. And they were just good match. A family that one from slavery in the south to the host of white house.
It’s just an amazing journey.
And an amazing, uniquely American journey.
From Good Morning, America,*, ABC News, Washington.
