Now, the VOA Special English program-Words and Their Stories.
Today, we tell about the word- wildcat. Humans have always depended on animals. From the begining of human history, wild animals provided food, clothing, and sometimes medicine.
We may not depend as much as wild animals now. But we hear about them everyday. Americans used the names of animals in many ways. Many companies use animals to make us want to buy their goods. Automobile companies for example, love to show fast horses when they trying to sale their cars. They also named their cars for other fast powerful animals. Automobile Manufactures and gasline companies is especially like to use big cats to sale their products. They like lions, tigers and wildcats.
When the Americans say wildcat, they usually mean a links and isolate, or bodcat. All these cats attack quickly and fiercely. A wildcat repersents something fast and fierce. What better way is they to sell car, then to say it is fast as a wildcat. Or what better way is they sell gasline, then to say that using it like putting a tiger in your tank.
And earlier American used of the word wildcat was quite different. It was used to describle members of congress who declared war on Britain in 1820. A magzine noted that year said a wildcat congressmen went to home. It said they were unable to face the responsibility of having involving their country in unnessary war.
Wildcat also has been used as name for money. It was used this way in 1900. At that time, some states permited banks to make their own money. One bank in the state Mixgen offered paper money with a picture of the wildcat on it. Some banks, however did not have enough gold to support all the paper money they offered, so the money has little or no value. It was called a wildcat bill or a wildcat banknote. The banks who offered this money were called wildcat banks. A newspaper of the times said those were days of wildcat money. It said a man may be rich in the morning and poor by night.
Wildcat was used in another way in 1800s. It was used for an oil well or gold mine that has almost no oil or gold in it. Dishonest developers would buy such property. Then, they will sell it and leave town with the money. The buyers were left with worthless hole in the ground. Today, wildcat oil wells are in areas that are not known to have oil.
Yet, another kind of wildcat is wildcat strike. That is strike called without official approve by a union. During the Word War II, an American publication accused wildcat strikers of slowing goverment production.
