Todaywe talk about the word wildcat. Humans have always depended on animals. From thebeginning of human history wild animals provided food, clothing and sometimes medicine. We may not depend as much on wild animals now. But we hear about them every day.
Americansuse the names of animals in many ways. Many companies use animals’ to make uswant to buy their goods. Automobile company, for example, love to show fasthorses when they are to sell their cars. They also name their cars for otherfast powerful animals. Automobile manufacturers and gasoline companies especiallylike to use big cats to sell their products. They like lions, tigers and wildcats. When American say wildcat, they usually mean a links and isolate or aboutcat. All these attack quickly and fiercely, so wildcat represent something fastand fierce. What better a way is there to selling car than to say it is as fastas a wildcat. While what better a way used there to sell gasoline than to saythat using it is like putting a tiger in your tank.
Andearly American use of the word wildcat was quite different. It was used to describemembers of congress who declared war on Briton in eighteen twelve. A magazine ofthat year sell the wildcat congressman went home. It’s said they were unable toface the responsibility of having involved their country in an unnecessary war.
Wildcatalso has been used as a name for money. It was used this way in the eighteen hundreds. At that time, some states permitted banks to make their own money. On bank inthe state of Michiganoffered paper money with a picture of a wildcat on it. Some banks, however, didnot have enough gold to support all the paper money they offered, so the money haslittle or no value. It was called a wildcat bill or a wildcat bank note. Thebanks who offered this money were called wildcat banks. A newspaper of the timesaid notes with the days of wildcat money. It’s said a man might be rich in themorning and poor by night.
Wildcatwas used in another way in the eighteen hundreds. It was used for oil rare orgold mine that had almost no oil or gold in it. Dishonest developers would buysuch property, then they would sell it and leave town with the money. The buyerswere left with worthless holes in the ground. Today wildcat oil wells are inareas that are not known to have oil.
Yetanother kind of wildcat is the wildcats strike. That is a strike called withoutofficial approval by a union. During world war two an American publicationaccused wildcats strikers of slowing government production.
