A cold spell gripping much of the nation is being blamed for several deaths.

In Atlanta, residents are used to temperatures in the fifties this time of year. But for the past week, they’ve been dealing with icy conditions. Local emergency officials have been warning people to be extra careful especially when it comes to bodies of water. They say even though ponds, lakes and streams may look sturdy enough to play on, they are extremely dangerous.

“It is a real danger that people here don’t understand, and it needs to be a warning to every parent who sends their kids out in this cold weather that this is right around the corner in their own backyards.”

On Saturday, two teens died after falling through the ice in a partially frozen pond. “I would never thought that when your friends would fall through something, you know, it’s pretty hard for me to break ice at my house, I think you will break that easily.”

Authorities say the boys were in the frigid water for nearly an hour before rescue workers could reach them. While cold and icy conditions are that unusual in other parts of the country this time of year. The freezing temperatures are still wreaking havoc. In Vermont, State Police say a snow-mobiling accident on a lake killed three people including a three-year-old girl.
