Transportation secretary Ray LaHood says Toyotas on the recall list are not safe to drive. When it is telling law makers the government will make sure safety problems are repaired. NPR’s Paul brown has more.
Lahood says the national highway traffic safety administration will carefully oversee Toyota’s handling of the big recall.“ We are going to work 24-7 and we are going continue until every Toyota is safe for their customer to drive.” And Lahood says the government will investigate whether vehicle electronics are involved. “that issues has been raised enough,we need to do that been raised by people drive Toyotas,been raised by members of congress,we gonna do it.”asked why the government didn’t push Toyota to start its recall sooner,Lahood responds that get tens of thousands of complains each year regarding of numerous issues at auto brands. He says the agency acts when it sees patterns emerge. Paul brown NPR news Washington.

President Obama wants more corporation between government and business to solve the nation’s economic problem. The president spoke to a group of CEOs the business round table today, he is a strong believer in free market,but insist the government must play a role by setting rules for the market keeping the social safety net and pay for common items,such as public schools.  

In the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca ,13people have been killed in what police believe was a drug related shooting. NPR’s Jason Beaubien reports.
Local officials say as many as 20 gunman in SUVs stormed out to a ranch road and killed the rancher and at least 3of his sons, the assailants  then attacked another neighboring family,some of the dead were children. At least 5 local police who tried to confronted the heavily armed gunman were also killed. The local mayor says the attack which occurred in a remote part of Oaxaca near the border with of appears to be the work of one Mexico’s drug cartels. Meanwhile in the north of country,Mexico soldiers on Tuesday seized 15tons of marijuana at a road block in California. Jason Beaubien NPR news Mexico city.

Federal authorities are accusing a New Orleans police officer of hiding police misconduct after hurricane Katrina strike the city in 2005. Former Michelle is charged with obstructing justice for filing false information on a police report. It is connecting to a shooting incident that two civilian dead and four hurt. Seven officers are now charged with murder and attempted murder ,prosecutor now allege the former file fake information to try to make sure the shooting would be seen as justified.

The chairman of Federal Reserve says a little before interests rates go up again. The chairman Ben Bernanke told the house panel low rates are necessary till the US economy recover from the recession.

On wall street the dow is up91points at 10373. This is NPR.

Winter has returned to the Winter Olympic Games. Snow is falling on mountain venues,including on the snow boarding and free style ski courses. The wintery field returns before one of the busiest day for women competing at the Vancouver Games. As NPR’s Howard Berkes reports.
Fresh snow and fog envelope the skiing course in Whistler where American Julie seeks to repeat the gold medal performance she had four years ago in giant slala .Julie has two silver medal so far in this Olympic. Crush in the first round in the race. Three American women have qualified for the finals in the area skiing. It is the first time any US woman qualified in the events since Nicky Stone won the gold medal in the 1998. Three American slides are close to the podium heading into the final women sliding races tonight, on the short track ice,three races are scheduled including the women 3000 rally where Americans are medal contenders . in the Canadian and US American hockey team practice today,as they prepare for their gold medal showdown tomorrow. The CEO of health and insurance company is telling the congress why the company has to boost premiums. In prepare testimony,Wellpoint CEO Angela says health cost has soared in this country especially cost from doctors drug makers and hospitals. Wellpoint owns Blue cross which wants to increase rates for some consumers in California by up to 39%. California congressman Henry Waxman alleges his panel has documents showing that Wellpoint is paying many of its executives millions of dollars in salaries and spending sums of dozens of company retreads.
