[Homework]SENEWS-2010-03-17
This is the VOA Special English Health Report.
Researchers say American children now eat an average of three snacks a day between meals. A study found that those snacks add up to almost one-third of all the daily calories eaten by children. And those extra calories could help explain the raise in overweight children in the United States.
The study was done at the University of North Carolina at Chaple Hill. The researchers studied the diets of 31000 children ages two to eighteen over a three-year period. They found that the snackings have increased since 1970s.
And what kinds of snacks have increased the most salty, high fat food like chips. The study also found great snacking on cake, cookies and other treats that passed generations might have saved for after dinner. The study is in the journal Health Affairs.
Nutrition professor Barry Papken was the leading investigator, he says parents should limit snacks to one a day for children age six or older, he also advices parents and care givers to provide health snacks like fruits and vegetables.
Professor Papken says American schools also need to improve their nutrition, for example, schools may have vending machines that offer what many people would consider junk food. There has been a push for schools to provide much health food snacks and lunch choices and fewer surging drinks.
Earlier this month, Coke Cola said it would stop selling the sugaring drinks in American schools unless parents request them. Its competitor at Peisp just announce that they will stop sells of sugared drinks to schools worldwide.
An American top Public Health officer wants to see more changes like this.Surgeon General Regina Benjimin recently spoke to law makers about making the healthy foods more available. These growing consistence that, we as a nation, need to recreate our communities and our environments was healthy choices, but easy choices and affordable choices.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Visaiker, who has talked about his own childhood struggles with weight, agrees about the need. We need to do a much better job, making sure what is in the vending machines is very consistent,we think the time is coming for standards. The first lady Michelle Obama is leading a campaign to fight childhood obisity. Public Health Official reported in January that more than 17% of American children are severely overweight.
