This is the VOA Special English Health Report.

Researches say American child now eat * three snacks a day between milks. A study found that those snacks at up almost one-third of all the dialy calorics eated by child. And those extra calorics could help explain the rise of overweight child in the United States.

The study was done at the  University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The researches study the diets of 31000 children ages 2 to 18 over a 30-year period. They found that snacking has increased since the 1970s. And what kinds of snacks have increse the most, salty high fried foods like chips.

The study also found the greater snacking on cake, cookies and other chips that past generations * saved for after dinner. The study is in the journal Health Affairs. Nutrition professor Berry * was the lead investigator.

He says parents should limit snacks to one a day for child age 6 and the older. He also advises parents and the caregivers to provide healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables.

Professor * says American schools also need to improve their nutrition. For example, schools may have * machines that offer what many people wounld consider junk food. There has been a push for schools to offer more health snacks and lunch choices and fewer sugary drinks.

Earlier this month, Coca Cola said it will stop selling sugary drinks in American schools unless parents request them. Its competitors and * just pronounced that they will stop sell of sugary drinks to schools worldwide.

Americans Top Public Health officer wants to see more changes like this. Surgeon General ** recently spoke to law makers about making healthy foods more available.

**:" This is going considering the weak as a nation need to recreate our communities and our environments, the healthy choices, other easy choices and the affordable choices."

Agriculture Secretary Tom * who has tall about his own child who is * with weight agrees about the need.

Tom *:" We need to do a much better job making sure the *** machine is very consistent. We think * the time is come for *."

First lady Michel Obama is leading a compaign to fight childhood obesity. Public Health officials reported in January that 17% of the American children are seriously overweight.
