Researchers say American children now eat and average of three snacks a day between meals. A study found those snacks at up to almost one third of all the day calories eaten by children. And those extra calories could help explains the rise in overweight children in the United States.

The study was done at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The researchers study the diet of the thirty-one thousand children ages two to eighteen over a thirty years period. They found that snacking has increased since the nineteen seventieth. And what kinds of the snacks have increased the most salty high fat foods like chips.

The study also found the greater snacking on cake, cookies and other chips that past generations might saved for after dinner. The study is in the journal Health Affairs.

Nutrition professor Barry Pupgen was the leader in investigator. He says parents should limits snacks to one of day for children age six and older. He also advises parents and care givers to provide healthy snacks like foods and vegetables. Professor Pupgen says American schools also need to improve their nutrition. For example, schools may have wounding machines that offer what many people what consider junk food. There has been push for schools to offer more helpful snacks and lunch chances and fewer sugary drinks.

Earlier this month, CocaCola said it would stop selling sugary drinks in the American schools and less parents request them. It’s compared that Pepsi just announced that they would stop sells their sugar drinks to schools worldwide. American top public health officer wants to see more changes like this.

Surgent general Regina Bangeman recently spoke to a lawmakers about making health foods more available.

REGINA BANGEMAN:” It’s growing can consist that waiting as a nation need we create a communities, and a # #, and health chance, but easy chance and a food chance.”

Agriculture secretary Tom Billshek who has talked about his own child who struggles with weight agrees about the need.
