[Homework]【整理】2011-01-02&01-08 四分钟了解200个国家过去200年的发展 (1/2)

So, here we go. First, the axis for health, life expectancy, from 25 years to 75 years. And dowen here, the axis for wealth, $400, $4000 and $40000. So, down here, is poor and sick; and up here, is rich and healthy. Now, I will go to show you the world 200 years ago, in 1810. Here comes all the countries, europe brown, asia red, mideast green, africa south of sahara blue and the america is yellow. And the size of the country bulble shows the size of the population. And in 1810, it was pretty crowded down there, wasn't it? All the countries were significantly poor, and the life expectancies were below 40 in all the countries. Only UK and Netherland were better off, but not much. Now, I start the world, the industrial revolution makes countries in europe and elsewhere move away from there. But the colonized contries in asia and africa were stuck down there. And eventually, the western countries get healthier and healthier. And now, we slow down and see the impact of first world war and spanish fluepidemic. What a catastrophy! And now I speed up through the 1920s and 1930s. And in spite of the great depression, the western countries forge on towards the greater health and wealth. Japan and some others try to follow up and most stayed down there. Now, after the tragedies of WWII, we stop a bit to look at the world in 1948. 1948 was a great year, the world war was over, Sweden topped the medal table of winter olympics and I was born. But the differences between the countries of the world was getting wider than over. United States was in the front, Japan was catching up. Brazil was way behind and Iran was getting a little richer from oil but still had short lives. But the asian giant, China, India, Pakistan and Indonesia were still poor and sick down there. But what was about to happen.
