[Homework]SENEWS-2011-03-21
This is VOA Special English Technology Reprot.
A powerful earthquake struke the northeasten coast of Japen at 2:46 pm local time on M*,Japan's media relatrical angecy released its first tsnamin warnings just 3 minites later, the country has one of the best earthquake early-warning systems in the world.
There are more than 4,000 signs make intensity metres in place throught out Japen to measure earthquake actitivity, these metres provide information within 2 minites when earthquake happening, information about the strang and the centre can be learned within 3 miniters. There are also kind create seawalls around much of the Japenese coast line, but these meatures proved no match for the powerful earthquake and tsnamin.C* is a tsnamin export, with apartment of civil and enviormental engenering at the university of surbern california in Los Angels.
Japan is one of the most well-prepared countries on earthquake and tsnamin warnings. They had warning, but I think what was wrong is they hadnot dissipated even the size of the *.
He says there are 2 reasons for this:Japen has not had any event anywhere near as big as this one in the last 150 years, and scientists hadnot expected such a large earthquake happening of the coach the Japan. The 9.0 powful magenatude earthquake was the forth powful earthquke every recorded worldwild ,it was also the worst earthquake ever to hit Japen. The tsnamin waves that followed were reported reach as high as 13metres in some areas.
C* says Japan's conclict seawalls were not built to handle such high waves.
The country seawalls in many places in Japan are about 10 meters, about 33 feet. In Sendai, they were about three meters as fast .So that not area they were not experted and such size of waves.
A tsnamin wave can travel as fast as 800 kilometres per hour.To get to higher ,people were often have to travel for many kilometres ,this can take more time than a fast-travelling tsnamin will permit, this is espercially true in cases like Japan while the centre of the earthquke stuck so close to the coast land .The tsnamin waves followed almost immediately.
Experts say early warning systems will continue to be limited by these facts until earthquakes and tsnamins can be predicted.
And that's the VOA Special English......
