A new term and a new controversial era in education, here at Ark Atwood Primary Academy in Central London, teachers are preparing to welcome a new intake of pupils. It's one of the 24 so called 'free schools', semi-independent set by parents, teachers, faith groups and other organizations who think they can do a better job in what's offered in their own community. They have their own curriculum, here is a focus on Maths and Performing Arts. Two classes will have just 26 pupils each and the school day will be longer, 8:30 until 4:00.

Having that longer school day and it is to really teach, a core curriculum, English Mathematics to ensure that all children leave our school able to read, write and become to mathematicians, but also that longer school day enables us to offer an enriched curriculum. The Performing Arts for example, the dance, the drama, the music and the singing, we can incorporate all of that within our school day rather than having to offer that as additional curriculum opportunity.

The free schools can be set almost anywhere, but the department for education says they should offer balanced and broad based education. They must teach English, Maths and Science, but can teach whatever religious education they choose. Money will come from the government. The 24 open running will cost between 110-130 million pounds. All free schools in England will be subjected to inspections by OFSTED.

It's the annual rush to buy school uniforms and parents here aren't convinced about some schools going at it alone.

"You know, when you run schools like new area, so it's got to a new completely different school, I would not know."

"You send this child to school that you have heard about and know about, so I need to know more about it so I think forward my decision on that."

Critics say that free schools will prove divisive, will cater in the main for the white middle class and take funding away from state schools already struggling.

"You know, head teachers up and down the country, he would love to have class size of twenty in their schools. The free schools can have it, but state schools in the maintained sector can't. That is fundamentally unfair."

The government rejects this criticism. It says free schools will drive up standards in local areas, benefiting all children. The first term will prove a crucial test.

You send your child to school that you have heard about and known about, so I need to know about it before I make any decision on that.

Critics say that free schools will prove divisive, will cater in the main for the white middle classes and take funding away from state schools already struggling.

There are head teachers up and down the country, who would love to have class size of 20 in their schools. The free schools can have it. But state schools, in the maintained sector, they can't. That is fundamentally unfair.

The government rejects this critism. It says free schools will drive up standards in local areas, benefiting all children. The first term will prove a crucial test.

A new term, and a new controversially known era in education, here at Ark Atwood Primary Academy in central London, teachers are preparing to welcome the new intake pupils. It’s one of 24 so called “Free Schools”, semi-independent, set up by parents, teachers, faith groups and other organizations. They think they can do a better job than what’s offered in narrow community. They have their own curriculum. Here with a focus on math and performing arts. Two classes will just have 26 pupils each, and the school day will be longer, 8:30 – 4:00.

Having that longer school day enables a really teach, a cool curriculum, English and mathematics to ensure that all children leave our school able to read, write and be competent mathematicians.  But also that longer school day enables us to offer an enriched curriculum, the performing art for example, the dance, the drummer, the music and singing. We can incorporate within our school day rather than having to offer that as additional curriculum opportunity.

The “Free School” can be set up almost anywhere, but the Department for Free Education said they should offer a balanced and broad based education. They most teach English, math and science, but can teach whatever related education they choose. Money will come from the government. The 24 up and running will cost 110 and 113 million pounds. All Free School in England will subject to inspections by off state.

It’s the annul rush to buy school uniforms. Parents here unconvinced about some schools going it alone.

You know when you are around schools, and you wear it, such guys know you are in a completely different school.
