A new term and a new controversially era in education. Here at Ark Atwood Primary Academy in central London, teachers are preparing to welcome a new intake of pupils. It’s one of 24 so-called free schools semi-independent set up by parents, teachers, faith groups and other organizations. They think they can do a better job than what's offered in their own community. They have their own curriculum, here with a focus on math and performing arts. Two classes will have just 24 people each. The school day will be longer, 08:30 until 04:00.

"Having that longer school day enable us to really teach a core curriculum, English and mathematics, to ensure that all children leave our school are able to read and write and be competent in competition, but also that longer school day enable us to offer in a rich curriculum the performing arts, for example, the dance, the drama, the music, the singing. We can incorporate all of that within our school day rather than having to offer that as an additional curriculum opportunity. The free school can be set up almost anywhere but the department for education says they should offer a balanced and broad based education. They must teach English, math and science but can teach whatever related education they choose. Money will be from the government. The 24 open running will cost between 100 million and 130 million pounds. All free schools in England will be subject to inspections by OFSTED. It’s the annual rush to buy school uniforms and parents here aren’t convinced about some schools going it alone.
"You know what you are worrying schools can be various. Those guys are new completely different schools and I wouldn’t un..”
"You send your child to a school that you’ve unheard about and unknown about and so I need to know more about it before I think for a decision on that."
Critics say that free schools will prove divisive, will cater in the main for the white middle classes and take funding away from states’ schools already struggling.
"You know head teachers have been down the country, he would love a class size of 20 in their schools. The free schools can have it but the states' schools in the maintained sector can’t. That is fundamentally unfair"
The government rejects this criticism and it says free schools will drive up standards in local areas benefiting all children. The first term will prove a crucial test.

A new term and a new controversial era in education.  Here at to a primary academy in central London, teachers are preparing to welcome a new intake of pupils.  It is of 24 so-called free schools seemingly independent set by parents, teachers, face group and other organizations who think they can do a better job in what's offered in their own community.
They have their own curriculum, herein focus on Math and Performing Arts.  Two classes will have just 26 pupils each. And the school day will be longer, 8:30 until 16:00.  Having that longer school day, and I was to really teach a cool curriculum, English, Mathematics to ensure that all children leave our school I would read, write and become competent mathematicians. But I would say that longer school day and it was as to offer an enriched curriculum, the Performing Arts, for example, the dance, the drama, the music and singing, we can incorporate all of that within our school day rather than having to offer that as additional curriculum opportunity.
The free schools can be set in almost any way.  But the department of education says they should offer balanced and broad based education.  They most teach English, Math and Science, but can teach whatever religious education they choose.  Money will come from the government, the 24 open-running will cost between 110 and 130 million pounds.  All free schools in England will be subjected to inspections by Off-stand.
It's the annual rush to buy school uniforms.  Parents are unconvinced, but some schools go it alone.  And you know, there are various schools, and it can vary such as guys were new in complete different schools all with that.  As you sent child to schools you have heard about and know about, so I need to know more about it what I think for my decision that on.
Critics say that free school will prove divisive, will cater in the May for the white middle classes and take funding away from state schools already struggling.
There are teacher up and down the country, who would love to have classes of 20 in their schools.  But free schools can have it.  But state schools in the maintained sector can't.  That is fundamentally unfair.
The goverment rejects this criticism.  It says free schools will drive standard of local areas, and fitting all children.  The first term would prove a crucial test.
