New York has a second nickname, The City that Never Sleeps, an insomnia metroplis in perpetual motion. Like the city, the subway never rests, runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It's the fastest way to get around-- everage speed on asphalt, ten kilometers per hour; everage speed on rails, forty-eight kilometers per hour.
Conceived in the nineteen's century, it was the world's first subway with four track survice, two local tracks, two express, no waiting.
In a city, chokes by congestion, the subway was a breakthrough. From a single line tentacles spread across the country to become the most intensive subway system on earth. Twentysenven lines run alone thirteen hundred kilometers of track, enough to stretch from Rome to Amsterdam. Linking the system, four hundred and sixty-eight stations. More than any other system in the world. The system spread its reach through a complex net of infrastructure, sixty-eight bridges over land, water; fourteen tunnels under rivers, two key rail links and one of the world's oldest ferries.
Every working day , the train carries four point five million people , near the entire population of Norway, making it one of the world's busiest subway system. Within this vital organ, life pulses with the speed of New York minute. And everyday the city struggles to keep it beating and keep it safe.
To outsiders this city can seem on big faceless metropolis. To New Yorkers, it's  a vast patchwork of neighbourhoods, each but it's own identity, all linked by these precious threads Zsteels.
