Knowledge of TV Ratings
In the U.S., the term "TV ratings" immediately makes people think of "Nielsen" because Nielsen Media Research has become the de facto national measurement service for the television industry in the United States and Canada. Nielson measures the number of people watching television shows and makes its data available to the television and cable networks, advertisers and the media.

Chip: Well we’vereached that time in our program while we perform our ratings formula. For thatlet’s go to expert number cruncher Baxter Orion.
Orion: Thank you, Chip. Nielson’s gathered the datafrom the meters to project the number of homes or viewerswatching in the entire population. This is named as impressions. Additionallyeach cable network has a total number of subscribers possibly watching aprogram known as the universe. When we take the number of impressions and dividedby the universe, we get a percentage which is our cable coverage rating. Nowlet’s say two different cable networks had 25 million people watchingin prime time. One network had 100 million subscribers, while theother had 50 million subscribers. Putting this in our formula, we get,oh, oh, the first network delivered at a 25.0 coverage rating, and theother delivered at a 50.0 coverage rating.
Chip: Exactly. Because the first network’s universe is double the latter. It’salso important to remember that the rating is an average minute statistic.
Orion: So, let’ssay the monster truck rally under a 25.0 rating, then 25 percentof cable networks subscribers were watching during the average minute of that telecast.
Chip: Oh, and what about commercial minutes? Do they count toward theprogram rating too, uh? Do they?
Orion: Oh you bet they do. All minutes of the program are averagedtogether, but many advertisers want ratings for thecommercials, for that we just take the average of eachcommercial minutes rating in that program, and weinclude anyone who watches live, plus any DVRplayback within 3 days. We call commercial ratings C3 ratings. The Cstands for commercial and the 3 stands for viewing within 3 days.
Chip: Bax youare blowing my mind, what else you got?
Orion: Cable network ratings can also be represented as US ratings. Onlynow the US ratings universe includes all TV homes in the country. Thenumber of impressions is now divided by the number of possible viewers inthe entire country. This universe is used for all broadcast networksand automatically for comparing one cable network to another.
Clay: And that’s all she wrote.
Chip: Well, that’s aboutall the time we have this week, folks. This is Chip Spalding.
Clay: AndI am Clay Rogers for ratings center, saying go for the calculate. |
