Where are we going here?
It’s Charles Dickens’ bedroom
And I gather there is a cellar as well, someone
Yeah, that’s right
And what did Dickens use the cellar for then?
Oh, I think mainly probably some of his stuff slept in it, but I think he also used it for contraband.
Contraband?
Contraband, yeah, when he died, there was 250 gallon drums, barrel of tobacco and 2000 bottles of brandy, finding in the cellar.
Oh, that’s completely color my view of him as we have respectable member of society there.
Now this is where Dickens wrote, this is where he finished David Copperfield, it’s little airy nest as he called it, it’s about the size of a nest, it’s quite small and surprised how small it is, it’s almost like he forced himself to sit down and write, it’s Victorian equivalent of a writer switching off his mobile phone and disconnecting Internet to avoid all distractions here. But here is where this whole room forces you to look out towards the sea.
In David Copperfield, he described towards the end of novel a gigantean storm scene that killed several major characters in the novel, I won’t reveal names and that would spoil things and Dickens himself found these quite traumatic scenes not just in storm but as novel reached conclusion, quite difficult to finish, he says he was nearly clean knocked over by the writing of it, and at one point he says it defeated me. In actually fact, those things, well some of the most powerful things that Dickens had written to date, and he did it, here this desk and let’s see if I can get some inspiration, maybe for my next link as I look out towards the sea just drink it all in.
