BBC: Armandos Tale of Charles Dickens  | BBC

This is Dickens' own annotated reading copy of the scene in which Sikes kills Nancy in Oliver Twist. And this was the highlight of Dickens' public readings. It had people fainting in the aisles and running out. And you could see it's got his underlinings and emphasis where he's signalling to himself that he's going to pause and add a dramatic action. We got here a little marks in side margin here, "beckon down". You won't be too violent, underlining, murder coming, that's a little note to himself now to shift up another gear, we're in the home stretch of this bludgeoning and once we get up to the moment of murder itself, this is turning into quite passionate, violent, very physical performance here. The annotations are now scarring the whole of text here. Action. Mystery. Terror to the end. Dashed out his brains. Double explanation mark at the end. Dickens' public readings were quite sensational; they were the hottest ticket in town, they were wildly popular. People would queue up overnight, the place would be mobbed. It was like Lady Gaga come to town. His tour of America was quite strenuous and energetic and really fatigued. He was quite ill, but Dickens couldn't help but throw himself into it physically and mentally. And many people say that, in particular, it was his performance of the reading of the Sikes and Nancy scene that in the end killed him. In June, 1870, Dickens suffered a stroke and died at home. He was 58 and he was half way through writing a new novel. It was a small unremarkable ending for a writer that had lived such a large remarkable life. But then Dickens never was very comfortable with endings.

David Copperfield finishes with a whole host of characters, including Mr. Micawber sailing off to Australia to start a new life. And they succeed, Micawber grows prosperous. While at home David marries again and lives happily ever after. But this ending doesn't feel so happy when we shut the book.

He had people fainting in the aisles and running out. And you could see it's got his underlines and emphasis where he's signaling to himself he's going to pose a dramatic action. We got here a little mark, a side mark here, beckon dawn. You won't be too violent, underlining, murder coming, that's a little note of himself now is to shift up another gear, where the whole stretch of this bludgeoning and once we get out to the moment of murder itself is turning into quite passionate, violent, very physical performance here. The annotations and the scaring whole detested him, action, mystery, terror to the end, dashed out his brains, double explanation mark at the end. Dickens' public readings were quite sensational; they were the hottest ticket in the town, the most widely popular. People would queue up overnight, place would be more. It was like Lady Gaga come to town. His tour of America was quite strenuous and energetic and really * he was quite ill, but Dickens couldn't help but flow himself into it physically and mentally. This is Dickens’s own annotated reading copy of the scene in which Sykes kills Nancy in the Oliver Twist, and this was the highlight of Dickens’s public readings having people fainting the isles and running out. You can see he got his underlining and emphasis where he is sinking to himself and going to poison out dramatic action. We got here little marks and side marks “baking down”, “you wouldn’t be too violent” underlining “murder coming”, that’s a little note to himself “now is shifting to another gayer”, when he was in the whole stretch of this bludgeoning. Once we get up to the moment of murderer itself, this is turning out to be quite passionate, violent, very physical performance here. The annotation is scarring whole of the texting—adding “mystery” “terror to the end” “dashed out his brains”—doubled this mark in the end. Dickens’s public readings were quite sensational. They were the hottest tickets in town, widely popular, people would queue up overnight, and the place would be more. It is like Lady Gaga comes to town. His term for America was quite strenuous and energetic; really the prestige is quite ill. But Dickens couldn’t help frowning himself into it physically and mentally. Many people say it is particularly performance of the reading of Sykes and Nancy, since an Indian killed him.
In June, 1870, Dickens suffered a stroke and died at home. He was 58. And he was half-way through writing a new novel. It was small, unremarkable lending through a writer who wrote such a large remarkable life. But then Dickens was never comfortable with endings. David Copperfield finished with a whole host of characters including Mr., sailing off to Australia to start a new life. And they succeed, Mr. Cuba grows prosperous, but at home, David marries again and lives a life happily ever after. But this ending doesn’t feel so happy when we shut the book.
