BBC: Sacred Rivers With Simon Reeve

英国广播公司:西蒙里夫圣河之旅 第三集 Yangtze 长江

Simon travels along the Yangtze, discovering a revival of religious faith in China. Starting his journey at the first bend in the Yangtze, Simon follows the river to Dazu where he sees 50,000 ancient and exquisite rock carvings, some of the only religious artefacts not to have been destroyed under communist rule.

Taking a river cruise, he arrives at the Three Gorges Dam, the biggest power station on the planet. Simon's journey ends in Shanghai, a shining symbol of China's new economic might but also a city where many are rediscovering religious faith.

Following the Yangtze, who've taken me into the heart of a country once cut off from the outside world, but that's now been transformed.-Look, what we as a species are capable of! It's displayed here and I think like nowhere else I've seen on planet Earth.
There's no doubt China's growth in recent decades is being remarkable, with hundreds of millions of people lifted out of poverty.
-I've been taken it back, frankly.
But with prosperity is coming a search for mean. Are their faith and beliefs here that can help influence the path the country takes in the future?
-What a fantastic viewpoint! It's breathtaking. Part of the reason I wanted to start the journey along this stretch of the Yangtze, because this is the first bend in the river. So what? I hear you say. Well, the river, the Yangtze, is heading south this way and really should head out of China, but it hits these hills, those mountain ranges over here which made of hard limestone. It just can't erode even over eras of time, so the river doesn't abrupt about turn and heads that way back into and across China, and in doing so takes water and civilization and life to hundreds of millions of people.

Following the Yangtze will take me into the heart of the country once cut off from the outside world, but that’s now been transformed because of what we are the species of capable of. It’s displayed here I think like nowhere else I have seen on planet earth. There is no doubt China’s growth in recent decades has been remarkable with hundreds of millions of people lifted out of poverty. I will be taking it back frankly. But with prosperity is coming a search for meaning. All their faith and belief here that can help influence the country that takes in the future. What a fantastic view point. It’s breath taking. Part of the reason I wanted to start the journey along this stretch of the Yangtze because this is the first bending of the river. So what here is? Well, the river, the Yangtze is heading south this way and really should head out of the China, but it hits these hills, this mountain range. Over here it’s made of hard limestone. It’s just cut a road even over eons of time, so the river does an abrupt and bowed turn and heads that way back into and across China and in doing so takes water and civilization and life to hundreds of millions of people.
