[Homework]2016-04-19&04-21 尼日利亚振兴农业,实现粮食自给自足
12 tons of rice produced per hour, at full capacity this mill in northern Nigeria produces 75,000 tons of rice annually, the machines run 24 hours a day, but just a few years ago, they almost ground to a halt.
According to the Nigerian ministry of agriculture, the country consumes about 6 million tons of rice per year, a major market for anyone involved in rice production, but for years the local industry that would have profitted from the huge rice appetite was crippled by high cost of production, decaying infrastructure and unbridled importation, a recent introduction of favorable policies such as higher tariffs on imported rice is slowly reviving the local industry, leading to renewed interests in rice production among Nigerian farmers.
Over the last five years since we have production, there is so much increase in rice farming, more especially in the specific crop that is non grain, that can compete with any type of grain all over the world, and this is achieved while the farmers see there is a lot of money in the farming.
The Kesap crop also known as the P is also popular in the Nigerian diet, and the rise in Kesap flour mills have exponentially increased its demand, but most of the local small scale farmers who supply to these factories still use rudimentary farming equipment for harvesting, like digging sticks and holes which means they are unable to meet the growing demand for the crop, a new joint government in private sector initiative in the country hopes to change this, the project aims to make tracks affordable and accessible for small and medium scale farmers, in order to grow them from subsistence farming to the commercial level.
The purpose of this project is to make an * farming, because we are talking about commercial agriculture, we are talking about export, tons of product, we can not get to that world standard without mechanisation, before if you have 1,000 acres, it takes them probably six months to finish, with farming tractors in that area, they'll finish in one and half months, and which mostly most of the time they don't do that, so definitely production will increase by the percentage of the tractor, house power that is supplied in that area, so which in turn becomes revenue for the farmer and also for the country.
According to the Africa Development Bank, the continent has more than half of the world's arable and uncultivated land, and with the rising global population, food supply will become increasingly more valuable, some experts say even valuable than oil, to harness the huge potential, organisations such as ONE have launched campaigns across Africa in support of boosting agriculture investment. In one of their campaigns they come up with a phrase do agric, it pays, they also brought together several top African recording artists to come up with a song to target the youth, using popular tunes and catchy lyrics, they aim to rebrand agriculture is cool and has a sustainable source of income, the message here is clear, for Africa to have a thriving economy, agriculture must take center stage.
