Did it ever cross your mind that the skim milk in your morning coffee could be causing you to break out? Never crossed my mind. Apparently, it's true. With us this morning, board certified dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe got new findings on how your diet could affect your skin. Good morning.

Good morning.

So no skim milk?

No. You know a number of studies are now showing that people who drink dairy milk are more likely to struggle with breakouts and acne. You know, it has to do with the combination of the hormones in the milk as well as the milk proteins, things like whey and casein. And you know interestingly, skim milk has the strongest association with acne. You know, so many of my patients are up for skim milk, they need to cut calories in healthy, but they are actually triggering inflammation in skin.

Interesting. So you mentioned whey, whey proteins. Actually, people use whey…

Oh my god, yes.

It's in a lot of the protein bars.

Vast majority of protein supplements are made with whey, and recent studies are showing that whey actually triggers inflammation acne in the skin. In fact, body builders and athletes who supplement their diet with whey, you know for shakes, movies’ bars, they are actually much more likely to break out on the face, chest and back.

What should we be going for instead of whey or skim milk?

Some X milk, for almond milk or coconut milk, both of them very low in calorie, great for the skin. And instead of whey, you can choose like a vegetable, base type protein like a pea protein, a rice protein.

I hesitate to ask this, but I've been told to ask about carbs. I like bread and potage, but carbs are apparently bad for the skin.

No, no one likes to know this, but if you want clear skin, refined carbs are like the worst thing you can do. So white bread, white potage, chips corn like Espressos, they recap the skin. They increase something called insulin-like growth factor one, so bad for the skin. So if you're craving carbs, try to go with a complex carb, you know?

So do you never have bread or pasta?

I do, I do, but I try to incorporate it with healthy fats, proteins, things that are gonna slow the digestion, and you know, the absorption of those sugars, because they are refined sugar, when they are quickly absorbed, that triggers the acne.
