It was a rowdy lower house of Congress which met to decide Dilma Rousseff's future, within minutes of the debate starting, security had to be called to keep her supporters and opponents apart. With the president fighting for her political life, one by one the votes will cast, critics wearing the green and yellow of Brazil's football team manage to get the two thirds needed to see the country's first female president impeached.
Dilma Rousseff came to power in 2011, enjoying soaring popularity, but her fortunes have changed dramatically, with corruption rife in Brazil, her supporters say opposition politicians are equally responsible for the country's economic and political chaos, a third of those voting in the impeachment debate are either under investigation or charged with crimes. The case against the president is even many of her critics would say rather week, it's based on a rather technical accusation that she manipulated government accounts in order to hide a budget deficit, her defenders say that what actually happened is a coup, and that Dilma Rousseff the president is being punished for an unrelated corruption scandal, and for the poor performance of the economy over the last few years.
This could be the beginning of the end for Dilma Rousseff, by early May the senate will decide whether there is a case to answer, 41 senators out of 81 must vote in favor for proceedings to continue, if that happens Dilma will be suspended for up to 180 days during an impeachment trial, during which vice president Michael T will step in, if two thirds of the senate find the president guilty, she'll be removed from office permanently.
