Once again, to that big parenting alert, new recommendations for keeping baby safe while they sleep. Here's a look at new guidelines. Oh, you know, putting babies at sleep can be tough, but don't take short cuts. There are new recommendations that make sure they are safer while they snooze. The American Academy of Pediatric's releasing new safe sleep guidelines on Monday to help prevent many of the 3,500 sudden, unexplained infant deaths, including from sudden infant death syndrome, SIDS, that happens every year in the US. The Academy now recommending that baby should sleep in the same room as their parents for the first year, lowering the risk of SIDS by up to 50%. Staying in the same room, but not the same bed. More new advice? Skin to skin contact for the first hour of life reduces the risk of death, and so does breastfeeding. And of course, baby should be put to sleep on their backs.
And our chief health and medical editor, Dr. Richard Besser, is gonna join us. Now, same room but not same bed, that's the key.
That's right. You know, these recommendations have been a long time coming for a while, since they've come out with this, but SIDS it's rare, but it's the leading cause of death in the first year of life. There's been no movement in about 20 years, and so the big message from this is in the same room but not the same bed. The same bed there's worried about smothering. You also don't want to feed your baby or fall alseep on a couch or an armchair. Breastfed babies have the risk of those who aren't and a pacifier even reduces the risk.
A pacifier?
Yeah.
How so?
They think it major keeps baby a little bit more alert, before you put it on the back, but that's interesting.
Alright. So you're gonna give us an example here, because somebody tells you see things want to be beautiful and comfy. What's safe?
So you look at this and think, Oh, my, it's so cozy and comfortable. It's exactly the wrong way to go, so let's make this safe. You want to get rid of the blankets, Okay, those going in the baskets. Get rid of the pillow.
All right.
Get rid of these nice, lovely stuffed animals, okay? You wanna have a nice, firm mattress, a tight feeding sheet, and put the baby down on her back to sleep. And that is the safe way to go.
Okay, no blanket. But if it's cold, you know, people want to put something on the baby. What do you suggest?
Okay, so a couple of things. First, make the house comfortable so that you are comfortable wearing just a light outfit. And then you can put your baby down in one more layer than you would wear. So you can have one z and then add a zip-up, okay? But no blankets, because the blankets can entangle and can occasionally smother.
Okay, so just a layer like we do.
Exactly.
Just like us.
You know, it may not be the way you like to sleep, but it's the safest way for your babies.
And that's what's the most important.
Exactly.
Thank you very much.
