As the partial government shutdown, heads into its 20th day, president Trump spent the day at Dallas, Texas border with Mexico. As NPR's Carrie Kahn reports Trump says he is considering declaring a national emergency to get his wall built.

President Trump arrived in the border city of McAllen, Texas and was greeted by local officials. Demonstrators gathered outside a border patrol station where Trump received a security briefing. Protesters held signs, one reading Our only crisis is Trump's failing presidency. Supporter signs read Build the wall. Trump also drove to the banks of Rio Grande river and town of mission, the area's now the busiest legal crossing point along the entire border. One customs and border patrol official told Trump that the 90% of apprehensions are occuring in the area, not covered by a war. Trump said that was only needed to hear and that is just commonsense to build it, without that he added, there would be lots of deaths, lots of deaths. Carrie Kahn NPR News, McAllen, Texas.

Back home in Washington, federal workers none too happy with the partial government shutdown also staged protest, accusing the president and senate majority leader of blackmailing the American people by refusing to reopen the government. An estimated 800,000 federal workers, either full load working without pay. Jimmy Rodneyx, an investigator with the department of housing and urban developments, said she can't just make adjustment suggested by the president.

We have mortgages and rent to pay. We have student loans to pay. We have day care cost to pay. We have car bills to pay. We have all of our bills to pay. And we need our pay checks now.

The House today passed two bills to reopen certain departments, the federal government, that have been shut for nearly three weeks but senate republicans have showned little interest in taking up the measures.

President Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen has agreed to testify before congress. As NPR's Ryan Lucas explains Cohen will appear for an open hearing with lawmakers early next month.

Cohen has agreed to volunteerly testify before the House oversight committee on February 7th. Cohen says in a statement that he has accepted the panel's invitation to appear out of his court, commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers. He says he looks forward to the opportunity to give a quote, full and creditable account of events. Cohen pleaded guilty to financial crimes, lie to congress as well as two campaign finance violations. The campaign finance crimes involve hush money payments to two women to keep them quiet about alleged affairs with Donald Trump. Cohen was sentenced to three years behind bars. He is scheduled to report two federal prison in March. Ryan Lucas NPR News, Washington.

Retail chain Maysee is leading other similar company stocks lower today, amid reports of lack cluster holiday sales. Maysee shares one point down nearly 19%, other retailers like CosTargetx and Nortch Shamx were also seeing their stocks fall. Still Wall Street closed higher today, the Dow was up 122 points. This is NPR.

About 50 Kurdish migrants have been rescued off Italy southern coast after their sail boat was grounded. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli has this update.

Residents of the tinny town of Milisanx in the Colabrainx shore, woke up in the middle of the night to the shelters of 51 migrants, including six women and four children, stranded on the beach. Local town's people brought the migrants to safety, and stuffed at local hotel provided blankets and shelter. The migrants were later brought two nearby reception centers. Italian media report that two suspected smugglers were arrested and that one migrant is missing. The rescue occured at a time of high tension among European Union partners over burden sharing in the migrantion crisis. Italy's hard right interior minister Matteo Salvini has taken a zero tolerance approach vowing no more migrants arriving by sea will be allowed entry. Sylvia Poggioli NPR News, Roma.

Singer Lady Gaga said she is sorry for her 2013 collaboration with R. Kelly, amid allegations in a documentary series that he sexually abused women and girls. Gaga singing the song entitled Do what you want with my body, was recorded at what she called a dark time in her own life, as victim of sexual assault. She said she would not work with Kelly again. Meanwhile R.Kelly has denied allegations contained life time series titled, surviving R. Kelly which began airing last week. Prosecutors in Illinois have called for alleged victims to come forward but say they can't do anything without cooperation.

Crude oil furtures prices continue to gain ground today. Oil ending the session up 0.04% to close at $51.59 a barrel in New York.
