In Florida a sheriff’s deputy arrested for not taking action during the shootings at Parkland high school remains in jail. NPR’s Greg Allen reports a judge has ordered the former high school resource officer to be held until he surround his passport. Scott Peterson was a Broward county sheriff’s deputy stationed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School the day a gunman killed 17 students, teachers and administrators. The day of the shooting he went to the building where a gunman was active but never went inside. After a fourteen month investigation, he was arrested this week and faces among others 7 felony counts of child neglect. At his first court appearance in Fort Lordil, the judge set Peterson’s bail at 102000 dollars, and ordered him to surround his passport. After the shooting, Peterson retired and moved to North Carolina. whose attorney says his passport is **. The judge says Peterson will remain in jail until the passports retrieved and deliver to authorities. Peterson’s lawyer calls the charges politically motivated. If found guilty of all charges, Peterson could face more than 96 years in prison. Greg Allen, NPR news Miami.
President Danold Trump arriving in the Ireland for his first visit as US president said today he thinks Britain’s proposed exit from the European Union will work out fine. Trump speaking to reporters before meeting with Ireland’s prime minister Leo Varadkar who he praised as important ally, ‘this trip is really about great relationships that we have with UK, and I really want to do this stop in Ireland, it was very important to me because of the relationship I have with the people and with you prime minister’. Two American women and six children are being repatriated to the US from northern Syria, Kurdish authorities in Syria say they are being returned at the request of US government. More from NPR’s Ruth Sherlock. Local Kurdish officials told NPR that the women and children were handed to US authorities more than two weeks ago. Their identities have been kept private, but they are believed to be family members of ISS fighters captured by US backed forces as they fought the extremist group. Thousands of foreigners from dozens of countries who traveled to join ISS, and now being held in detention camps and prisons in northeast Syria. A state department spokesperson confirmed the women and children are out of Syria, and said appeals by alleged American citizens to return to the US are being looked at on a case by case basis. A new study finds in states at expanded medicaid fewer people died from heart attacks and other heart conditions. NPR’s S Douphen reports. The authors from the university of Pennsylvania analyzed county level data from the centers for disease control and prevention. They focused on adults ages 45 to 64, and looked at cardiovascular deaths from 2010 to 2016, in that time, 29 states and Washington DC expanded Medicaid under the affordable care act. The researchers found fewer people died from cardiovascular causes and states were medicaid with expanded compared with states that did not expand Medicaid. The city was published in ** cardiology, it comes the same week as Yale study that found Medicaid expansion eliminated ratio disparities and timely treatment of cancer. Today fourteen states have not expanded Medicaid. S Douphen, NPR news.
Package shipper Amazon says there has a new drone that expects to be delivering packages to consumers in months. The chief executive of the company’s consumer business Jeff Wolkey saying today the drone takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter, is also more stable than prior models, he said it can also spot objects better than humans. Amazon has been using drones in the UK.
