Live from NPR news in Washington, I am Jack Spear.
President Trump says there is a good chance the US will be able to strike a deal with Mexico on immigration issues. NPR’s Ishy Rusco reports Mexico has been trying to convince Trump to not follow through with plan tariffs next week. President Trump has tweeted that if an agreement is reached, Mexico will begin buying US farm products quote ‘at very high levels’, and if there is no deal he says Mexico will start paying the new 5% tariffs on Monday. Trump has threated to place tariffs on all imports of Mexico goods, unless the country’s government does more the curb the flew of central American migrants trying to into the US. He also called for Mexico to crack down on illegal drug trafficking. If the tariffs do take effect as plan, they will then rise regular intervals until US demands are met. The house will vote Tuesday on a resolution that authorizes the judiciary committee to seek civil enforcement of its subpoenas of attorney general William Barr and white house counsel Don Megan among other things. This is a civil contempt to other statutory contempt of congress. Democrats are not pursuing criminal contempt against Barr or Megan since criminal contempt is a legal dead end because the department of justice has prosecutorial discretion is not going to take up charges against their own attorney general.
When the state of Alabama executed Cristopher Price for murder last week, there was one very unusual thing about it. In denying a state of execution, the supreme court blacked out more than half of the briefs in the case so the press and public couldn’t see them, no reason was given. Now the reporters committee for freedom of the press joined by NPR, It’s calling on the court to unseal the material. Here is NPR’s Nina Totenburg, all of deletions in this case were at the insistence of Alabama, according to lawyers for defendants. The reporters committee in its brief said that the state did not provide an explanation for why the record in the case could not be made public. The committee noted even in the Pentagon paper’s case, when the government claimed a national security reason for barring publication, the briefs were entirely public and only limited parts of the record in the case were sealed. The Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an unarmed woman was sentenced to twelve and half years in prison today. Mohamed Noor apologizing the family of Justin Ruthchec Damen, the day Ruthchec had called 911 to report a possible sexual assault outside her home. When she approached the officer’s car, Noor fired to the window killing her. The sentencing described the event two year ago, ‘I knew, in an instant that I was wrong, the depth of my error has only increased from that moment on. Working to save her life and watching her slip away is a feeling I can’t explain’. Noor was convicted of third degree murder and second degree manslaughter.

US government is hitting Iran with new sanctions, the latest sanctions target the country’s largest patrol chemical company over its support of Iran’s revolutionary guard. According to the US Treasury department, the sanctions would apply to the Persian Gulf patrol chemical industry’s company and thirty nine of its subsidiaries. The company currently holds about forty percent of Iran’s patrol chemical industry, US has continued to threaten Iran over its nuclear weapons program after president Trump pulled out of the multilateral Iran nuclear deal.
Russian president Vladimir Putin says the Trump administration is targeting Chinese Tech giant Huawei because US fears new competition. As NPR’s Lucy Kim reports from Moscow Putin is hosting Chinese president Xi Jinping at the Kremlin as seeking to form a unified front against the US. President Xi was the guest of honor at the business forum in St Petersburg, where is host to tackle the western model of economic development. President Putin said the pressure on Huawei shows US wants to push the competitor out of the global market. Putin defended the Kremlin’s model development, even as its own allies criticized Russia’s current investment climate. Michael Kalvy a long time American investor who planned to attend forum is now under house arrest in Moscow in what appears to be a business dispute. Putin said only a quarter can determine his guilt or innocents. Lucy Kim, NPR news, Moscow.
Troubled book seller Barnes and noble has been sold to a Hedge Fund company, the sale with debt included is valued at about 683 million dollars. Ironically some smaller independent book sellers have survived despite the rise of digital publishing.
