Thousands of Venezuelans poured into Peru last night hoping to make it across the border before new immigration requirements took effect at mid night. An estimated eight hundred thousand Venezuelans have already entered Peru fleeing an economic and political crisis. John Nodes has more, previously Venezuelans needed only a national ID card to enter Peru, but starting today they will need a passport and a visa. The new rules come as Peru struggles to absorb Venezuelan migrants who officials blame for a spike in crime. In a speech, Peruvian president Martin Scadar said the new rules would improve security, but many other migrants lack passports due to shortages of paper and other materials in Venezuela. Critics predict the tougher measures will simply prompt more Venezuelans to enter Peru illegally. For NPR news, I am John Nodes. Anti-riot police assembled at north border of Peru hours after the new entry measures took effect, the country’s foreign minister says some exceptions will be made including for minors with ** certificates who are traveling to meet their parents in Peru.
Government officials in Mexico say the country could be swamped with the asylum seekers and migrants, it’s a part of the agreement just reached with Washington. James Beliers has more from Mexico city. Mexico’s human rights Chief Alahando Anseners warns there are already forty thousand asylum seekers in Mexico, but thousands more will swallow the numbers to double that all more by year end. So he and secretary of the interior Aug Sanchez are formulating a national human rights program trying to stem the crisis. Sanchez says no matter how difficult the situation it must be faced. Someone who has not prepared to do that is the director of Mexico’s migration institute C Chugian who has resigned. For NPR news, I am James Beliers in Mexico city.

Zimbabwe began implementing rolling blackout across the country in May, but the scheduled power cuts have been growing longer for some people going as much as 15 hours per day without electricity. E Fandicur reports this shortage is due to low water levels on lake that’s a primary source of electricity for the country. The nationwide power shortage is the latest on a list of acute problems facing Zimbabweans. Many urban areas have gone for years without running water, and have to buy water in bulk or dig wells. Hospital are running low on essential drugs most of which are important. This past week the price of fuel went up for the third time this year. In January, a fuel price hiked high food prices triggered violence protests, a ** number of civilians were killed by the arm. In the past, Zimbabwe has imported power from neighboring countries, but those countries had now cut off supply because the Zimbabwe owes millions and can not pay for the power. For NPR news, I am E Fanddicur in H.
