Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm x.
In Philadelphia, police say at least six officers have been wounded in an active shooting situation that's still going on. The officers are at area hospitals with none life-threatening injuries. And authorities are asking both people to stay away from the area and also media helicopters, too. Police say they are interfering with the operation. The Health Sciences Office at nearby Temple University is on lockdown. The White House says the president has been briefed on the situation.
Survivors of child sexual abuse who've waited years for justice to be served are getting a chance starting today to hold their alleged abusers accountable. The New York legislature is temporarily extending the statute of limitations. NPR's x reports judges in the state are bracing for a flood of lawsuits. New York had one of the most restrictive statute to limitations on sex abuse cases, meaning many adult survivors of child abuse haven't been able to file claims. The legislature this year revised that, setting the one-year filing window for old cases and allowing other survivors up until their 55th birthday to file claims. One law firm says it alone has 1200 clients ready to file. Among the institutions bracing to be hit by new claims are the Boy Scouts of America and the Archdiocese of New York. The Catholic Church had lobbied against the revision of the statute of limitations. So many new suits are expected that dozens of additional judges have been designated to deal with them. x, NPR News.
In El Paso, Texas, the 22 people shot and killed at a Walmart a week and a half ago are being remembered in a memorial service tonight. Thousands are expected to attend. Police say the gunman who was in custody confessed and said that he deliberately targeted Latinos. Meanwhile, Governor x says Texas is adding manpower to gang investigations surrounding white nationalist groups in the wake of the shooting.
It's another highly volatile week for the stock market. Tuesday's big stock rebound proved a transitionary rally for an anxious market. x has more on today's sharp drop on Wall Street and the mounting economic worries behind it. Despite soft manufacturing, job gains and consumer spending have been solid, but the bond market is flashing danger ahead. The closely-watched relationship of short- and long-term interest rates has flipped, with two-year treasury yields going above ten-year ones. Such a yield inversion has long been seen as a harbinger of recession. Investors fear trade frictions will further slow the global economy, with bank shares plunging. The Dow Jones Industrial fell more than 800 points to close 3% lower. The S&P and the tech-heavy NASDAQ had similar losses. For NPR News, I'm x.
And for the NASDAQ, it was down 242 points today, the S&P500 down 85.

The U.N. Refugee Agency says time is running out for more than 500 refugees and migrants who are stranded in the Mediterranean Sea. x reports two rescue vessels are still unable to find a European country willing to allow them to dock.
Italy and Malta still refuse to provide a safe haven for the refugees and migrants. U.N. Refugee Spokesman, x, says the situation is becoming increasingly desperate, as conditions on board the vessels deteriorate and storm clouds gather. "The rough seas are expected to intensify during the course of today and into tomorrow. I mean, really, this is a question of how much we are willing to turn a blind eye to the suffering of people who have fled war and violence." Those rescued at sea are people from Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan, and include more than 100 children. x says they are in urgent need of disembarkation. For NPR News, I'm x in Geneva.
If you need to boost your Barbie collection, there is a new Star Wars-inspired doll set soon to be out. Mattel is releasing three collectable dolls with Barbie spins on Princess Leia, Darth Vader and R2D2. They can be pre-ordered for delivery in November and they cost about 100 dollars each. The most popular ordered so far, Darth Vader Barbie.
Crude oil prices lower by the close, falling nearly 3.5%, ending today at 55 dollars 23 cents a barrel.
