Live from NPR news in Washington. I'm Windsor Johnston.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is accusing president Trump of using every element in his presidency to try to smear him ahead of the 2020 election. Speaking in Des Moines today, Biden called for an investigation into Trump's phone call with the president of Ukraine. I know Trump deserves to be investigated. He is violating every basic norm of a president. You should be asking him to question why he's on the phone with a foreign leader, trying to intimidate the foreign leader if that's what happened. That's apparently what happened. Several media outlets are reporting that Trump repeatedly pressured the Ukrainian leader to investigate Biden's son. Trump continues to defend himself against a whistleblower complaint that accuses him of making inappropriate promise to a foreign leader.

Residents in Southeastern Texas are cleaning up after the remnants of tropical storm Imelda brought torrential rain and catastrophic flooding to many parts of the gulf coast. Michael Marks from Texas Standard reports the storm dumped more than 3 feet of rain in some areas. In Liberty, a rural town about 45 miles east of Huston, flood waters inundated apartments on the bottom floor of 3 complexes that back up to a drainage ditch. This isn't the first time they flood it. Evan Purswellsays his unit had over 4 feet of water in it after hurricane Harvey. Imelda only left about 5 inches but he still has to leave. 'Every time it floods, you have to move out and find a place to live. And then you go out for 6 months. * leave the apartments. You get to move back again and wait a year and half and it floods again.' Purswellwill stay with his daughter in another stair’s unit at the same complex. If she wasn't living there, he says he's unsure where he would go. For NPR news, I'm Michael Marks in Liberty, Texas.

The high rate of suicide among veterans is unchanged. That's according to VA Statistics. NPR’s Quil Lawrence reports suicide has risen among veterans and civilians. The figure remains at about 20 per day. That's active troops and veterans who die by suicide. This latest annual tally includes data only through 2017 and it breaks down the number of 20 per day into about 17 veterans and 3 active duty or reservists. But that doesn't indicate the rate has gone down. The VA considers suicide prevention a top priority but suicide defies easy explanation. For example, veterans who went to war have lower rates than those who were never deployed. One clear difference between veterans and civilians is the use of firearms in suicide. Veterans are much more likely to know how to use guns than civilians, particularly female veterans who have a suicide rate more than twice that of civilian women. Quil Lawrence, NPR news.

A fresh round of clashes between demonstrators and the police over anti-government grievance broke out today in Hong Kong. Police fired teargas to disperse democracy protestors after pro-China groups ripped down anti-government messages. Protests have been ongoing in the city for months.

An annual benefit for farmers is under way in Wisconsin. Chuck Quirmbach from member station WUWM reports the Farm Aid Concert is putting the spotlight on an economic crunch causing hundreds of dairy producers in this state to quit selling milk. Ian Mellencamp got the music under way at an outdoor venue nearEast Troy, Wisconsin. 'You have to stay sharp if you're going to survive'. During an earlier penal discussion, farmers called for changes in federal policy to reduce an oversupply of milk that analysts say is probably to blame for a long period of low prices. SingerNeil Young also promoted national legislation requiring famers to use sustainable practices. ' We can't constantly be dumping chemicals on every plant that we plant and hoping that they won't do any damage.' Farm Aid says it will use revenue from the concert to make grants to farmers later this year. For NPR news, I'm Chuck Quirmbach in Milwaukee.
