Live from NPR News in Washington, I am Louise Schiavone.

The Trump administration's charge that Iran was behind an attack on Saudi oil facilities now has the backing of Britain, Germany and France. In a joint statement, the three European nations declared their solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia and urged Teheran to agree to new talks with world powers on its nuclear and missile programs and regional security issues. The statement came after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron met at the United Nations on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders.

In New York for the UN General Assembly, President Trump stepped up his defence of a Summer phone call with Ukraine' new leader. Reportedly, a whistleblower charges that Trump used the call to ask Ukraine to pressure the son of political rival Joe Biden. NPR's Franco Ordoñez has more.

President Trump again dismissed accusations that he was using his position of power to pressure a foreign government into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son. "I did not make a statement that you have to do this or I am not gonna give you aid. I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that." President Trump said he hopes to share a copy of the transcript of the call but stopped short of saying he would release it. He said he did not want to set the wrong precedent for calls with other foreign leaders. The controversy has consumed much of his participation at the United Nations General Assembly, including distracting from his religious freedom event and surprised visit to the Climate Change Summit after originally saying he would not go. Franco Ordoñez, NPR News, New York.

Opening statements began today in the murder trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger who shot and killed an unarmed man in his apartment last year. From member station KERA, Stella Chávez reports.

Guyger was just off a double shift when she parked on the wrong level and entered what she said she thought was her own apartment. Botham Jean lived in the apartment directly above hers. He'd been sitting in his sleeping room, watching TV and eating icecream when Guyger entered his home. The prosecutor says Guyger missed obvious clues that she was on the wrong floor like Jean's bright red doormat." Amber Guyger has no floormat in front of her door. Amber Guyger has nothing but a concrete floor." Guyger's defence attorney says she was tired and made a tragic mistake. The prosecution says she pulled the trigger with an intent and that makes it murder. For NPR News, I am Stella Chávez in Dallas.

British tour company Thomas Cook collapsed over the weekend, leaving hundreds of thousands of vacationers stranded around the world. British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says the UK government will help its citizens. "I took a decision that people only need to be back for work, for the family and all sorts of reasons, we can't just leave a Briton  stranded abroad." The tour company was 178 years old.

Wall Street, the Dow was up 14.

Russia is missing a Kremlin official. Charles Maynes says Moscow has filed a missing person report for someone who allegedly fled the country over his work as a CIA informant.

Russia's Interior Ministry now officially list Oleg Smolenkov as missing and subject to a search effort. The former Kremlin aid by that name disappeared while on vacation in Europe with his family back in 2017. Multiple media reports in the US and Russia, all are confirmed, he was, in fact, a CIA mole and had been extracted to the US out of concerns for safety. Those same reports say it was Smolenkove who informed the CIA about Kremlin's alleged role in efforts to influence the 2016 US elections, charges Russia has denied and President Trump has dismissed. A Kremlin's spokesman has downplayed Smolenkov's access to top-level government meetings. The White House and the CIA have also called the reports of Smolenkov's spying inaccurate. For NPR News, I am Charles Maynes in Moscow.

The strike by 49,000 workers against General Motors continues into its second week. A temporary restraining order is in place against striking UNW workers in Spring Hill, Tennessee, barring certain unruly behaviour. GM argued that some striking workers there had blocked traffic, placed strews and nails on public roads and damaged vehicles. According to court documents of about 109 unions' salary, GM employees and contractors are still working at that plant, so that it can resume normal operations when the strike ends. A spokesman for the union says it's committed to safety.
