The House Intelligence Committee's impeachment inquiry moves forward next week. Committee Chairman Adam Schiff says the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community will testify behind closed doors next Friday. Three House committees have subpoenaed documents from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. NPR's Claudia Grisales reports.

The House Committee subpoenaed Secretary Pompeo for records related to President Trump's dealings with the Ukrainian president. It's part of a ramped-up impeachment inquiry that's expected to keep up its momentum during a two-week congressional recess. The Foreign Affairs Intelligence and Oversight Committees also alerted Pompeo that they expect five key state department officials to testify before their panels over the next two weeks. The witnesses include several ambassadors to Ukraine and a deputy assistant state of secretary. Committee members have said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged them to keep up the momentum on the probe despite the October break. Claudia Grisales, NPR News, Washington.

A federal judge has issued a permanent injunction blocking a Trump administration rule that would allow the indefinite detention of families by US immigration authorities. Max Rivlin-Nadler of member station KPBS has the latest.

This summer, the government attempted to terminate the longstanding Flores Settlement Agreement which limits the time a minor can spend in federal immigration custody. Now Los Angeles Federal Judge Dolly M. Gee has issued a permanent injunction, saying that the new rule cannot go into effect because it violates the agreement. Attorney Carlos Holguin was one of the lead litigators in the case that led to the settlement in 1997 and defended it in a court here. "This isn't about border control, this is about treating children who are already in federal custody in a way that is decent." The government is expected to appeal the injunction to the 9th Circuit. For NPR News, Max Rivlin-Nadler in Los Angeles.

A group of environmental organization is suing the Trump administration for its decision to revoke California's ability to set its own talepipe emission standards. We get details from NPR's Nathan Rott.

The Trump administration's decision to end California's auto emissions waiver under the Clean Air Act broke nearly 50 years of precedent, and like most of the administration's many many regulatory rollbacks, the move drew quick criticism and promised lawsuits. This lawsuit against the US Department of Transportation by the Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club and other environmental organizations, 1/3 of the administration's move is arbitrary and capricious, contrary to the law and unwarranted by facts. Nearly two dozen states are making similar claims. The challenges could make their way to the US Supreme Court. Nathan Rott, NPR News.

Amid worries about US-China trade conflicts, technology stocks sank today. Wall Street, the Dow closed down 70, the NASDAQ was off 91 points.

For the third time in three years, Wells Fargo has a new CEO. Charles Scharf, the Chief of Executive of the Bank of New York Mellon, has been named to the role. Wells Fargo is trying to overcome a series of recent scandals.

Fiat Chrysler has agreed to pay 40 million dollars to settle a complaint brought by the Security Exchange Commission. NPR's Scott Horsley reports the ACC had accused the carmaker of falsely inflating auto sales.

The ACC says Fiat Chrysler paid its dealers to report fake car sales in order to maintain the illusion of uninterrupted sales growth over a period of four years. Investors keep a close eye on car sales as a measure of the automaker's performance. Regulators say Fiat Chrysler painted an artificially rosy picture of steady sales growth, banking sales in good months and try them out when sales were slower. Fiat Chrysler neither admits nor denies its wrongdoing but the US carmaker and its parent company agreed to pay a 40-million-dollar penalty. The company says it has refined its policies and is committed to strong controls over sales reports in the future. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

Safety rules protecting construction and shipyard workers will remain in place after the Trump administration reversed calls on a planned rollback. At this issue, a substance called beryllium is found in abrasive powders often used to remove rust and paint from ship hulls. Beryllium is a toxic carcinogenic element. The announcement came today in a bulletin from the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
