Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Speer.

The House has approved a none binding measure that would limit president Trump's ability to take military action against Iran as criticism amounts over the killing by the US of a top Iranian general. Today's vote coming as House speaker Nancy Pelosi noted while the war powers resolution does not require Trump signature, nonetheless it has real teeth. Pelosi citing the fact is a stating of the US congress. Republicans meanwhile denounced the measure as little more than a press release designed to attack the president. Trump and vice president Mike Pence had called on GOP lawmakers to oppose the plan.

Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau says his country has intelligence indicating Iran shot down the civilian airliner his comments contradict Iran which has said the crash was due to mechanical failure. Here is NPR's Greg Myre.

Canadian leader Justin Trudeau says the intelligence comes from Canadian sources as well as allied country.

The evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by Iranian surface to air missile. This may while have been unintentional.

More than 60 Canadian who are among the 166 people killed when the Ukrainian airliner went down early Wednesday, just minutes after taking off from the Teheran airport. Hours earlier Iran had fired more than a dozen ballistic missles at US military targets in neighboring Iraq. Iran has maintained that the civilian airliner crashed due to a mechanical failure. US military officials are looking at the configuration of their defences in Iraq that follows the drone strike that killed Iran's top general. NPR's Tom Bowman reports the US base hit by Iranian missles did not have air defence system when it was attacked.

A senior defence official echoed a comment from president Trump that intelligence indicated Soleimani was planning an attack on the US embassy in Bagdad. The official confirmed there was no Patroit air defence systems in place at Al Asad air base in western Iraq. Where 11 Iranian ballistic missiles struck. The system was deployed to Saudi Arabia where Iranian attacks were expected. The US is considering shoring up American defences in Iraq. Tom Bowman, NPR News, the Pentagon.

President Trump heads to his first campaign rally of new year tonight with many people likely be watching to see what if anything. President has to say about the latest toss still between the US and Iran. Despite the fighting things appear to have come down.  Trump has been outspoken in the past in terms of Iran. US drone strike that killed the top Iranian general set off further escalation by Iran this week. There were no casualties in the missile launch against the US targets in Iraq. Trump is appearing tonight in Toledo, the US Iran issue to some extent putting impeachment proceedings against the president on the back burner.

On Wall Street stocks gained ground today. The Dow up 211 points to 28,956. The NASDAQ was up 74 points. You are listening to NPR.

French president Emmanuel Macron is continuing to stand his ground as trade unions push back against his plans to reform the country's pension system. Tear gas thrown through Paris today as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets. Some protesters smashing windows and spray painting Arc slogans on buildings. The country's left wing unions have rallies supporters in hopes derailing the plan which among other things to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Much of Puerto Rico remains without power after the region was rocked this week by its most powerful earthquake in more than a century. NPR's Greg Allen reports a major power plant that was severly damaged in the quakre remains offline.

The head of Puerto Rico's power authority told El Nuevo Dia newspaper, repairing the damage of the coastal soar plant which provides power to about a quarter of the island's customers who take at least a year. The 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck early Tuesday with the largest impact in towns on the southern part of the island. MOre than 2,000 people spent the night in government run shelters. Other slep outside, those in risk being caught in doors in another aftershock. President Trump approved federal emergency funding for Puerto Rico, but doesn't include money for temporary housing or rebuilding facilities damaged in the earthquake. Democrats in congress are calling on the Trump administration to release billions of dollars in aid authorized by congress after hurricane Maria, but which is not yet being distributed on the island. Crude oil futures prices continue to ease a bit today. Oil landing the session down $0.05 a barrel to settle at $59.56 a barrel in New York.
