LIve from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Speer.

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo has become the highest ranking US official to blame Iran for the deadly crash of Ukrainian passenger jet. As NPR's Tamara Keith explains he was speaking at a White House briefing.

The Boeing 737 went down shortly after taking off from Teheran killing everyone on board. Now secretary of state Pompeo is maintaining what the officials from the US and allied countries have been saying.

We do believe that it's likely that plane was shot down by an Iranian missile.

The investigation into precisely what happened designed going though, and he said the US would let it play out before making a final determination.

And when we get their results of that investigation, I am confident that we and the world will take preproductions in response.

Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin who was also at the briefing added that those aiding the investigation could get temporary wavers from strict sanction against doing business with Iran. Tamara Keith NPR News the White House.

House speaker Nancy Pelosi now says the House will take steps next week to send articles of impeachment to the senate to president Trump's trial. In a letter to her democratic colleagues today, Pelosi saying she's asked judiciary committee chairman Jerry Nadler to be ready to bring to a resolution to the floor to transmit articles of impeachment to the senate. Pelosi is held onto the articles in a standoff with senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. House democrats impeached Trump three weeks ago on charges of abuse and obstruction over his actions toward Ukraine.

With Boeing 737 Max jets grounded indefinitely following two deadly crashes, one of its parts producers is imposing layoffs. Naugi Follx with member station KMUW reports nearly 3,000 people of Spirit AeroSystems in WICHITA are expected to loose their jobs.

Spirit produces about 70% of 737 Max at its Wichita facility including the fuselage and parts of the wings. The program presents half of Spirit's annual revenue. The company announced earlier this week that it was seeking voluntary layoffs. Spirit employs more than 1300 people in Wichita and that is the city's largest private employer. In additional work on the 737, Spirit also builds parts for the Boeing 787 and 767 and parts to various Airbus jets at multiple facilitis worldwide. The company says smaller layoff has begun later this month at its two facilities in Oklahoma. The layoffs in Wichita are set to begin January 22nd. For NPR News, I'm Nagel Follx in Wichita.

US's economy was still creating jobs last month though it was slightly slower than forecast pace. The government says it's about 145,000 none farm jobs were added to the economy in December. The unemployment rate meanwhile held steady at 3.5%. Job's growth was well below the 256,000 jobs added in November though part of that was due to an end to the strike at General Motors.

A rally that briefly pushed the Dow above 29,000 phaseout in the final hours of trading today. The Dow closed down 133 points. This is NPR.

The White House says it is considering expanding its travel ban to additional countries amid a renewed election year focus by president Trump on the issue of immigration. That's according to people familiar with the discussion who say a document has been circulating in the White House outlining the plans. Over those same sources say the countries that would be affected have been blacked out. The expanded ban reportedly would include some countries that were initially included in the first ban but later removed from the list.

At least 13 people have been killed in an explosion in a mosque in a Pakistani border town. 20 more people are reported wounded. The death toll is expected to rise. NPR's Diaa Hadid has more from Islambad.

Images shared by local media showed the blast wiped off the walls inside the mosque. And hospitals declared a state of emergency. There was no immediate claimed responsibility for the bombing. But the city of Quetta has long been shaken by violence. Just few days ago, a roadside bomb hit a paramilitary force vehicle killing two troops. That bombing was claiming by a local affiliate of the Taliban. But ISIS also operates in the area. Quetta is also the capital of Balochistan, a province with a low level of Afghan insurgency. For the first time agro officials in Salt Lake city say they are documenting rare salt formation on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Officials said they hope the salt structures could yield insights into similar structures found on Mars. The structures are formed with mineral called mirabilite, separates out when water heats cold air, eventually forming into crystal spires and tyrosines. It's expected the structures will dissolve when the weather gets warmer though.
