Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Speer.

The impeachment trial of president Trump officially got on the way today with the swearing in of the senate and the chief of justice of the United States. NPR's Windsor Johnston reports members of the House also presented the articles of impeachment that charged the president with abuse of power and obstruction of congress in the dealings with Ukraine.

After being swearing in to preside over the Trump trial, chief justice John Roberts asked senators to scan as he administered the oath.

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer reflected afterword on the gravity of the proceedings.

When the chief justice walked in, you could feel the weight of the moment. I saw our members on both sides of the asile, visibly gawp.

Democrats are urging the senate to allow for additional documents and witness testimony especially in light of new details about president Trump's role in the effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate a political rival. Senate republicans continue to push back against those calls. Windsor Johnston NPR News, Washington.

A federal judge is postponing the sentencing of former Trump administration national security advisor Michael Flynn. The move coming just days after Flynn moved to withdraw his guilty plea. US district court judge did not rule immediately on the request to withdraw the pleaings that asking for additional court filings on the matter in the next month there so. The judge rescheduled the hearings for this month to February 27th. Flynn moved to withdraw his plea this week claiming the justice department backed out a promise by asking him be sentenced up to six months in prison for lying to the FBI.

A Connecticut man who exchanged what appeared to be menacing text messages with Lev Parnas about US embassador to Ukraine has received a visit from the FBI. NPR's Ryan Lucas has learned FBI agent showed up the home and business today of robber at hide.

The move comes days after a serie of text messages that hide exchenged with Lav Parnas and indicted the socialist Rudy Giuliani remained public as part of the impeachment inquiry. And those text to Parnas in March 2019, hide appears to suggest that he is monitoring the movements of then US embassador to Urkaine Marie Yovanovitch, hide who has launched a long shot being for congress has sent to justice incumbents posted online. The retail industry's main trade group is out with its final report on 2019 holiday sales. The national retail federation announcing today sales increased at the top range of the forecast, up 4.1% through November, and December sharping period. Stocks continue their rally on Wall Street today as investors mood over some solid earnings reports, the Dow up 267 points to 29,297. YOu are listening to NPR.

US and Russia are announcing a new round of talks focusing on arms control. Senior US and Russian diplomats meeting in Vienna today for what has been called a strategic security dialogue. The talks also expected to focus on recuding misunderstandings no critical security issues. The state department says the two sides discuss the size of the nuclear stockpiles, the threats of an arms race and potential for furture arms control and negotiations.

More than 1/7 adults in the US is physically inactive. That's according to a new analysis from the centers for disease control and prevention. NPR's Allison Aubrey reports these are significant regional differences and levels of inactivity.

The most activest state is Colorado where more than 80% of adults reported leisure time exercise. That compares to Puerto Rico where just over half of adults are physically active. By region, the south has the highest prevalence of inactivity. The studies based on federal survey data, people were asked if over the last month, they participated in activities just running, gardening or walking for exercises. There were notible differences by ethnicity too, overall hispanics at the highest prevalence of inactivity, being physically active helps people sleep better, feel better and reduce the risk of obesity and chronic disease. Starbucks says it intends to expand on the program that brings more of its coffee shops into low income areas and hiring workers who live there. Seattle based company announcing today it will open 85 stores by 2025 in rural and urban communities across the US, bringing into 100 number of so-called communities stores it operates.
