More than 205 thousand people have now died worldwide from covid-19, and health official have confirmed nearly 3 millions cases since the outbreak of the disease in China last December. This is according to tallies compiled by Johns Hopkins University. According to other tallies compiled by AFP and from official sources, including the World Health Organization. Here is the news for Sunday.
The United States has the highest death due to Covid-19. Over 53 thousand people have lost their lives. Italy has the second highest toll with more than 26 thousand death, followed by Spain, France and the United Kingdom, which is now reporting more than 20 thousand death. China has, to date, declared over 46 hundred deaths. Latin America and the Caribbean have suffered nearly 8 thousand death, with Asia losing roughly the same number of lives. More than 6 thousand reported dead in the Middle East and more than 13 hundred in Arica. Experts of every kind__(1) though say that these numbers could be much higher because of reporting trouble of nearly every kind.
Still, even as the hardest-hit countries are looking to the future and what's next in terms of resuming normalcy, Italian prime minister JC vowed__(2) Sunday to reopen schools by September and allowed many businesses to open in one weeks time. As the country emerges from a near total shutdown and world's longest, Italy's number of cases has been ebbing and the country believes its contagion rate is low enough to start getting back on track. And neighbouring Spain reports its daily coronavirus death toll dropped to 288 Sunday, the lowest since March 20th. Spain eased its lockdown to allow children outside for the first time in weeks.
As countries worldwide ease restrictions putting in place to stop the spread of covid-19, leaders urge caution. India prime minister NRD Modi warned the country about complacency in the fight against the pandemic in a Sundy radio address and appealed people to strictly comply with the nationwide lockdown that has been in effect for over a month. The prime minister, a popular leader in this country of 1.3 billion people, urged Indian to wear masks, follow social distancing norms and avoiding spitting in public places, calling these measures the biggest medicine to fight this disease in the days to come. India saw its biggest spike in cases of coronavirus infections on Saturday with nearly 2 thousand new cases. More than 800 people have died, and the country reports nearly 27 thousand cases of covid-19.
Thousands of prisoners in Cameron have effectively regain their freedom as ordered by the president of this center Africa state. This was after his government reported that the coronavirus pandemic was spreading and inmates were among the groups with the highest level of exposure. The government has not provide the number of infected inmates, but says more than 15 hundred people have tested positive for covid-19 in Cameron in less than 2 month, with over 50 death. The government says the prisoners who'll be freed would be infected with covid-19.
Saudi Arabia will no longer impose the death sentence on individuals who committed crime while still minors,the sate-backed human rights commission (HRC) said in a statement, citing a royal decree by King S. "The decree means that any individual who've received a death sentence for crime committed while he or she is a minor can no longer face execution. Instead, the individual will receive a prison sentence of no longer than 10 years in a juvenile detention facility," the HRC president said.
Yemeni separatists Sunday declared self-rule of the country's south, as a peace deal with the government crumbled, complicating a long and separate conflict with Iranian-backed rebels who control much of the north. The Southern Transitional Council (STC) accused the government of failing to perform its duties and of conspiring against the southern cause, and said self-governance had begun at midnight. The government condemned the move and said the separatists who have long agitated for independence in the south would be responsible for the catastrophic and dangerous outcome. |
