The UN’s cultural body UNESCO says it deeply regrets a decision by Turkey to turn one of the world’s most famous buildings Hagia Sophia in Istanbul back into a mosque. President Erdoğan made the announcement after a court annulled the site’s museum status. The move was welcomed by his conservative religious supporters. The building was first constructed as a cathedral 1,500 years ago.

Supporters of the opposition Worker’s Party in Singapore has been celebrating in the street after achieving unprecedented success in Friday’s general election. The party took 10 out of 93 seats. The others are won by the People’s Action Party, which has governed Singapore for decades.

The rate of deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon region has gone up by a record 25% in the first half of the year, compared with the same period in 2019. More than 3,000 square kilometers of rainforest were destroyed in the past 6 months.

The former girlfriend of the late financier and convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein has denied that she helped him to abuse underage girls. Lawyer for Ghislaine Maxwell also argued she should be grounded bail, citing the danger of contracting coronavirus in prison.
