The head of the World Health Organization says too many countries are mishandling the coronavirus pandemic, and that defeat of the disease is a long way off. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus accused many governments of giving out mixed messages that were undermining trust.
The governor of California, America's most popular state, has re-imposed a sweeping closure of public spaces, as the number of coronavirus infections soars. Gavin Newsom said all indoor activities at restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, zoos and museums would be required to shut with immediate effect.
The French government has signed an agreement with trades unions, giving more than eight billion euros in pay rises for health workers. Most of the money will go to nurses and care workers.
There has been outrage in Brazil after images of a policeman stepping on the neck of a black middle-age woman were broadcast by a national television station. The images aired on Sunday showed that the 50-year-old owner of a small bar southern Sao Paulo been immobilized by the placeman on the pavement.

A judge in the U.S has halted a federal execution seven hours before the lethal injection was due to be administered to a white supremacist in the state of Indiana.
The authorities in California say they found the body in the lake, where Naya Rivera, one of the stars of the American TV Show 'Glee', is presumed to have drowned last week.
