The head of the WHO is warning the Covid-19 pandemic is worsening globally, and it will not be business as usual anytime soon. In a press briefing today, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there will be no return to the "old normal for the foreseeable future at least until things stabilized”.
"We need to reach a sustainable situation where we have adequate control of this virus without shutting down our lives entirely."
Ghebreyesus said that while many countries in Europe and Asia have brought outbreaks under control, too many others are seen virus trends moving in the wrong direction. The WHO official also criticized political leaders were sending mixed messages.

US military is preparing to redeploy additional service members to support the cv response. NPR's XX says, more than 700 military health professionals have been dispatched to a number of hot-spots throughout the South and the West.
The bulk of the troops including doctors and nurses and support personnel are heading to Texas. The first group is going to hospitals in San Antonio and Houston with 4 other locations in Texas still to be determined. Meanwhile more than 150 Air Force medical personnel were head to California to help up with overstretched medical staffs there. These specific locations were not immediately announced. Just last week Texas officials reported more than 10,000 new cv cases, nearly 20% to the nation's new cases for the day. And on Sunday, California officials reported some 8,500 new infections which have been increased in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

NPR reported in late May about the stock holdings of Vice President Mike Pence's Chief of Staff. Marc Short, held up to 1.64 million dollars in individual stocks of companies related to the Trump adm's pandemic response. As NPR's XX reports, a member of Congress is launching an investigation into the issue.

Lebanon is spiraling deeper into economic crisis that's according to a new warning from United Nations' High Commissioner for Human Rights. He says many Lebanese have already faced destitution and starvation. NPR's XX reports, on the hardship wing, millions of people across Lebanon.
As the Lebanese Pound collapses citizens have watched the savings vanish. Par prices of food and other essentials including diapers and baby milk have soared. Tens of thousands of Lebanese now barter online, sometimes hawking ___ gym equipment or cloth for food. Citizens blame the problems on Lebanon's notoriously corrupt political elite. Residents have suffered through the summer heat with little electricity because the country lacks the fuel for its power station. This is the result of oil shipments being interrupted over scandal involving bribery and the waste of public funds. And now Lebanon lacks the dollars even to buy enough medication to stalk hospitals.

Tennessee's Govr has signed one of the strictest abortion laws in the nation that was quickly blocked by a federal judge. The measure signed by Republican Govr Bill Lee bans the procedure once a fetal heartbeat has been detected - as early as six weeks into pregnancy, which is before many women even know they’re pregnant. Similar legislation enacted in other states, including Mississippi and Georgia, has been blocked by legal challenges. Opponents of the bans are hoping to get that matter before the supreme court.
