[Homework NPR News 2020-11-22]
1. More than 12 million people in the U.S. are now infected with the coronavirus, with another 195 thousand cases confirmed just yesterday. The pandemic shows no signs of cresting as hospitalizations are reaching record levels.
Officials are begging people to stay at home this holiday season and wear masks.
More than 1000 hospitals are already critically short on stuff. That’s around 1/5 of all hospitals reporting data to the Department of Health and Human Services. And states are trying to get ahead of even more troubles including in California. We are starting this weekend; most residents are under a curfew. But vaccine news is offering hope. Pfizer says its vaccine is safe and 95 % effective.
Infectious disease Dr * says regulators have yet to agree.
“FDA will take a couple weeks to look through all those data, and it is a mass amount of data.” *has its own vaccine not far behind. If FDA grants an emergency use authorization, 2020 could end with some 20 million Americans inoculated.
And there are more than 255 thousand people in the U.S. who have died from covid-19 according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

2. A plan to allow freer travel between Singapore and Hong Kong and help tourism in both cities has been delayed because of the pandemic.
Health officials in the region are cautious as the numbers of virus cases are on the rise.
The plan would have let passengers on selected flights between the two cities forgo quarantines if they got tested before departure and upon arrival. This was supposed to go into effects this weekend. But HK has delayed the plan by at least two weeks amidst spike of coronavirus cases. That decision came after HK reported 43 new infections, 13 of which were untraceable. Under the plan, there must be fewer than 5 untraceable cases per day on a seven-day rolling average. HK is now about 4. But officials fear new waves of infections.

3. Canada and Britain have reached an interim trade pact agreement. The new deal replaces the current agreement
If new agreements haven’t been reached by the Brexit deadline of December 31st, new tariffs would have been triggered on a range of Canadian exports. The interim deal will address that until a formal agreement can be negotiated next year.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it a good moment that sent a strong message about the importance of the global trade. His British counterpart Boris Johnson said it would help both countries rebuild their economies after the coronavirus pandemic. He added it also offered the opportunity to tackle the climate change and create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the greener technologies.
The deal replaces the agreement with Britain that was under the #of EU.

4. A federal judge says the parent agency of VOA has violated the First Amendment rights of its own journalists.
Agency CEO Michael Pack turned VOA upside down, claiming it was biased against President Trump.
VOA and its sister networks including the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia offer robust news coverage for nations where there isn’t a vibrant or free press.
Pack was appointed by President Trump. Pack in June started firing and suspending top executives soon after. He initiated an investigation during the height of presidential campaign. Several journalists were suspended or dismissed. Top news executives say reporters are fearful to do political coverage
On Friday, the judge ruled that Pack had violated reporters’ First Amendment rights and ordered him to stop interfering with the newsroom. The agency has not responded to repeated requests for comment.

5. The first of two identical satellites to head into Earth orbit 5 years apart was launched successfully from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California today. The Sentinel-6 satellite’s main task is to monitor rising sea levels which is a consequence of climate change.
“It does that everywhere in the world once every ten days. From that we can figure out global sea level rise. How much the oceans are rising because of human-caused climate change.”
Sentinel-6 measures the height of ocean from 800 miles up with the accuracy of just one inch.
