More than 12 million people in the US are now infected with the coronavirus, with another 195,000 cases confirmed just yesterday. The pandemic shows no signs of c___ as hospitalizations are reaching record levels. And as NPR's XX reports, officials are begging people to stay home this holiday season and wear masks.
More than 1000 hospitals are already critically short on staff, that's around a 5th of all hospitals reporting data to the department of Health and Human Services, and states are trying to get ahead of the more trouble, including in California, where starting this weekend, most residents are under a curfew. But vaccine news is offering hope. Pfizer says it's vaccine is safe and 95% effective. Infections disease Doctor XX says regulators have yet to agree.
"The FDA will take a couple of weeks to look through all those data and it's mass amounts of data."
Moderna has its own vaccine not far behind. And if the FDA crants___ emergency use authorization, 2020 could end with some 20 million Americans inoculated接种.
And there are more than 255,000 people in the US of who have died from Covid-19, according to data from Johns-Hopkins University.

A plan to allow freer travel between Singapore and Hong Kong and help tourism in both cities has been delayed because of the pandemic. NPR's XX reports, Health officials in th region are cautious as the numbers of virus cases are on the rise.
The plan would allow___ passengers on select flights between the two cities or go quarantine if they got tests before departure and upon arrival. It supposed to go into effect this weekend. But Hong Kong has delayed the plan by at least 2 weeks amidst a spike in coronavirus cases. That decision came as Hong Kong reported 43 new infections, 13 of which were untraceable. Under the plan there must be fewer than 5 untraceable cases per day on a 7 day rolling average. Hong Kong is now at about 4, but officials fear a new wave of infections.

Canada and Britain have reached an interim trade pack agreement as XX reports, the new deal replaces the current agreement.
If a new agreement hasn't been reached by the ___ of deadline of December 31st, new tariffs would have been triggered on a range of Canadian exports. The interim deal will address that until a formal agreement can be negotiated next year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it in "Good Moment" that sends a strong message about the importance of global trade. His British counterpart Boris Johnson said it would help both countries rebuild their economies after the coronavirus pandemic. He added that it also offers the opportunity to tackle climate change and create hundreds of thousands of jobs in greener technologies.

A federal judge says the parent agency of the Voice of America has violated the First Amendment rights of its own journalists. NPR's David XXX reports, agency CEO XX turned VOA upside down, claiming it was biased against President Trump.

The first of two identical satellites to head into earth's orbit five years apart was launched successfully from Vandenberg Air Force Base范登堡空军基地 in California today. The Sentinel-6 哨兵6号 satellites' main task is to monitor rising sea levels, which is a consequence of climate change. XX is a climate scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.
"It does that everywhere in the world once every ten days and from that we can figure out global sea level rise, how much the oceans are rising because of human caused climate change."
Officials say the Sentinel-6 measures the height of the ocean from 800 miles up with the accuracy of just 1 inch. |
