An Iranian scientist long believed to have mastermind Tehran’s covert nuclear weapon program has been assassinated. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh died of his wounds after a gunman opened fire on his car. Iran’s head of the armed forces warned of a severe revenge for those who carried out the attack. The Foreign Minister has suggested Israel was involved in the assassination.
The Ethiopian military says that a key town has fallen to federal troops in the rebellious Tigray region and that the capture of the main city Mekelle was just a matter of time. Local authorities in Tigray say federal forces are bombarding towns and villages.
A suicide bomber has blown himself up in a popular ice-cream parlor in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, killing at least 7 people. 10 others were wounded in the explosion near the international airport. The Islamist Group Al-Shabaab staged regular attacks in the city.
A federal appeals court in the United States has rejected the Trump campaign’s latest effort to challenge the election results. Judges in Pennsylvania said the campaign offered no evidence of any election fraud. Mr Trump’s lawyers said they would appeal to the US Supreme Court.
Prosecutors in Switzerland are reportedly investigating the former World Football Executives Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter for alleged fraud in breach of trust. Both men were named in an initial probe announced in 2015 over payment of 2.2 million dollars made to Mr Platini from FIFA in 2011 in relation to a consultancy task completed in 2002.
And Paraguayan police have arrested a man on suspicion of extorting money from the family of the missing former Vice President Oscar Denis who was kidnapped by left-wing rebels in September. Officers said the man had pretended to be a member of the Paraguayan People’s Army, offering information on the whereabouts of Mr Denis.
