Live from NPR news, I'm Jack Speer. Prsident-elect Joe Biden announced several members of his economic team today, as NPR's *** report, he also officially confirmed former Fed Chair Janet Yellen will be his nominee for Treasury Secretary. If she's confirmed, Yellen would become the first woman to serve as Treasury Secretary in the department's more than 200-year-history. Biden also nominated Neera Tanden to serve as director of the office of management in budget. Tanden would be the first women of color to lead the OMB. Biden also named one of his former economic adviser Jared Bernstein into the concil as economic advisers, along with Heather Boushey - an economist who's focused on inequality. He tapped Labor Economist Cecilia Rouse to lead the concil. She would be the first African American in that position. In the statement, Biden said his team is comprised of quoted tested public servants, who will help the communities get harvest by the coronavirus. ***, NPR news.
As millions of Americans' returned from the Thanksgiving holiday, varies communities across the country are putting strict-to measures in place, into slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Los Angeles County impose the stay-at-home order for its 10 million residents, and Santa Clara County in the heart of Silcon Valley has temporarily banned high school, colleague, professional sports, and decreed a quarantine for those who have travelled more than 150 miles outside the county. Health experts had pleaded with Americans to stay put over the holiday, but millions ignored that advice. There's been roughly 13.5 million coronavirus cases in the US, more than 267,000 deaths. Most health officials expect the situation to worsen in coming days.
President Trump is still questioning the integrity of Georgia's election system and personally targetted its Republican leaders, despite the fact Trump said he will campaign in Georgia this weekend for incumbent Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. From member station WABE in Atlanta, Emma Hurt has more. Yesterday President Trump said he was ashamed he's endorsed Georgia's Governor Brian Kemp. This morning his tweeted at Kemp calling him hapless and asking him to overrule the Secretary of State to force a signature audit of absentee ballots. The governor's spokesman responded that Kemp cannot legally interfere the election process. Election officials had explained that a signature audit is impractical - at this point in the process, signature on absentee ballots envelopes had long been separated from the ballots themselves to protect the identity of the voters. Election officials say there's been no evidence of widespread fraud. For NPR news, I'm Emma Hurt, in Atlanda.
FCC chairman Ajit Pai said he's leaving his post on Inauguration Day. Pai, a Republican, is likely to be replaced by someone chosen by President-elect Joe Biden, whose administration traditionally chooses a FCC chairman. Pai has presided over a contentious FCC, he did undid net neutrality rules that barred internet service providers from favoring some types of online traffic over others. This is NPR.
The NFL San Francisco 49ers has found a home for the next few weeks in Arizona. The team of sports was to search for an option after the California Counties were practicism play games, now has temparorily banned on contact sports during the coronavirus pandemic, reports from NPR's Tom Goldman. During the pandemic, the NFL has stressed the need for flexibility, which describes the San Francisco 49ers' next 2 weeks. They will play home-games in Arizona instead of their stadium in Santa Clara, California. The county's banned on contact sports which is expected to last at least 3 weeks. The Niners will host games against Buffalo Bills and Washington in the stadium normally used by the Arizona Cardinal. The Cardinal *** home-games during some of the days the 49ers needed. Still to be determined - where the Niners practise. If they can't do that somewhere in the banned areas and then fly to Arizona for the games, the team may set up a coronavirus-protected bubble in Arizona for the entire 2 weeks. Tom Goldman, NPR news.
The number of Americans' signing contracts to buy homes last month declined for a 2nd straight month. The National Association of Realtors - the Industry's main trade group is annoucing its Pending Home Sales Index declined by 1.1%. Much of that drop is apparently due to lack of homes on the market, is still because of a extremely hot housing market over this summer. After lagging in the spring during the coronavirus pandemic, contract-signing is up 20.2% than it was a year ago.
