Corona virus vaccines are on the way to locations around the country, and officials say they expect 100million people in the US will be vaccinated by the end of March. 40 million doses are set to be distributed by the end of this month. NPR’s Selena Simmons-Duffin reports the first doses will be delivered to all 50 states tomorrow.
Next it’s the rush to start getting people vaccinated, to try to slow and eventually end the pandemic. The federal government is coordinating distribution to predetermined sites around each state, then it falls to state and local health department and health care providers to actually start administering the shots. It may take a few days of provider training about how to properly give the vaccine for the campaign to really get under way. Selena Simmons-Duffin, NPR news.

This as the number of confirmed cases in the US continues to grow, now topping 6.1 billion cases, with nearly 300,000 death, that according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Hospitals in many states say they are at capacity with ICU beds filled as they face a shortage of hospital staff. And as the number of corona virus cases rises around Europe, France is loosening restrictions on nursing homes starting this week so the residents can spend time with their families. As NPR’s Eleanor Beardsley reports, they will be able to receive visitors, even if they have tested positive for the corona virus.

The deputy health minister in charge of elderly affairs said that injecting the spirit of Christmas into nursing homes is essential to maintain family ties and fight loneliness. Protectors tore down black lives matter signs at two historically black churches in D.C after pro Trump rallies on Saturday, NPR’s Joel Rose reports.

Videos posted on social media appear to show a group of white protestors tearing down a black lives matter sign at one church and setting the sign from the second church on fire in the street. The pastor at the church compared the scene to a cross burning. The incident came after a rally in support of president Trump’s false claimed that he won a second term that attracted a large contingent of proud boys, a self proclaimed Western chauvinists organization which is widely considered a hate group, Anthony laranza Green is a co organizer with black lives matter D.C.
“The police apartments allow white supremacists to tear down and destroy property from a black church, burn it on the ground, stand back and watch it.”
DC police say they are investigating the incidents as possible hate crimes.

President Trump says he will veto the annual defense bill that covers the military’s budgets and raises for service members, he is adding unspecified concerns about China, tweeting today “the China is the biggest winner in the bill”. The Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell says the bill will help deter Chinese aggression. Earlier Trump said it was because the bill does not repeal legal protections for social media companies, but both the House and Senate passed that legislation by veto prove numbers.

In southern Utah some tribal leaders are preparing for a new Biden-Harris administration by calling for bears ears’ national monument to be restored to its original size after it was dramatically cut by the Trump administration. Ryan Heinsius of member station KNAU has more.

Navajo Nation president Jonathan Nez and others want president-elect Joe Biden to reestablish the monuments nearly 2-million-acre original size after he takes office next month.
The Navajo Hopi and three other south western tribes say the area is their ancestral home and culturally and spiritually crucial. They worry without federal protection it’s in danger of energy development, looting and vandalism. During the 2020 campaign Biden signaled he may use the Antiquities Act to reverse the Trump administration’s 2017order that’s slashed Bears Ear by 85% and the nearby Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by half.
