President-elect Joe Biden has gotten his first Covid-19 vaccine dose and like other parliament political figures, he did so on camera. As NPR'sTamara Keith explains, he's part of the efforts to build a public confidence on the vaccines. With camera rolling, Biden rolled up his left shirt sleeve,"I'm ready.", and, got his injection. As president-elect getting vaccinated is important for continuity of government, but Biden said he also wanted to send the message. "I'm doing this to demonstrate that people should be prepared when it's available to take the vaccine. There's nothing to worry about." Biden said that Trump administration deserved some credit for getting vaccines out quickly through its Operation Warp Speed. But he added, this is just the start, and he urged Americans to wear masks, socially distinct, and avoid travel if they can. Tamara Keith, NPR news.

More than 40 countries have now announced travel bans targetting the UK after an outbreak in England of a coronavirus variant scientists think is much more infectious. As NPR's Frank Langfitt reports, Prime Minister Boris Johnson went on national TV trying to *** at home and abroad. The France's banning trucks across English Channel at the border of Dover, Johnson told Britain there's no risk of food shortage, and that he has spoken to French President Emmanuel Macron about opening up the border as soon as possible. Johnson also emphasized the bans targetting truck drivers holding free and not shifting containers. "We believe the risk of transmission by a solitary driver sitting alone in the cab... are really very low." In announcing the risk of variant Saturday and lockdown in the southeast England, Johnson seemed not to anticipate how quickly and intensively other countries would react. Attorney General William Barr has weighed on the major hack of US government agencies, as NPR's Ryan Lucas reports, Barr says Russia appears to be behind the breach. The US government is still accessing the extent of the hack that first came to *** just over a week ago. Experts say it's pretentiously unprecedented in scope. The Trump administration has not formally attributed the hack at this point, while the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said over the weekend that it was pretty clearly the Russians. Speaking at a news conference, Barr says he agrees. "It's certainly, appears to be the Russians but I'm not going to discuss it beyond that." While Barr and Pompeo have both pointed the finger at Moscow, President Trump has refused to do so. Instead, Trump has sought to minimize the celebrity of the hack and has suggested China might have been behind it. Ryan Lucas, NPR news, Washington.

Majority of US House says vote at this hour *** the 900 billion dollars coronavirus aid bill, *** the 1.4 trillion dollars government funding measures, *** clearing a way for a full vote later this evening.

US Geological Survey says Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island has erupted. There were reports of lava fountain shooting 165 feet into the air. Eruption began late yesterday within the crater of the volcano which is located within Hawaii Volcano National Park. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit an hour after the volcano began erupting, US GS says it received more than 500 reports from people who found the quake but significant damages of the buildings and structures were not expected.

Offshore drilling began today in Bahamas just 115 miles from the Florida coast. NPR's Greg Allen reports, environmental groups and touring industry are concerned about the impacts of a potential spill. The Bahamas Petroleum Company says a drill ship that arrived last week has now begun to work on the well off the coast of *** Island. It's an area in the Atlantic close to the Florida coast *** been milled ongoing drilling. *** the company says *** survey identified potential oil reserve that eventually could produce more than a billion barrels of crude oil. The company says the well will be drilled "the highest environmental and safety standard" over the next 45 to 60 days. Environmental groups are concerned that the drill site is just 90 miles off the National Park of Bahamas. They have begun legal efforts to stop the operations. Greg Allen, NPR news, Miami.

A statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee in the US Capitol has been removed. The statue that represents the state of Virginia was taken out of Statuary Hall earlier today. Lee's status stood with George Washington since1909, as the state's 2 representatives in the US Capitol Building.
